I am not currently working? I had a baby last year and haven't gone back to work yet. There is a question on the initial interest form that asks if you are currently working and I had to answer no - is that an automatic disqualification? If so I won't waste my time, seeing as how everyone and their dog seems qualified and eager to teach education classes so I'm sure they have plenty of working applicants. Thanks!
You could always try... and put "yes" and then say you're on maternity leave. It may not work, so I wouldn't spend much time on it. There are so many other schools that don't require you to be employed, so I wouldn't take the rejection personally - just apply at others.
Many online teachers are self employed as real estate agents, accountants, etc. All you have to say is that you are a self employed consultant in education and that should make you a qualified candidate is that the case. I know of plenty people that make a living just as online teachers without a formal day job.
I've had the same issue. However, won't they check to determine that you really are a self employed consultant?
My wife and I are both high school teachers. My wife has been working with UoP for about a year and a half now. I'm still waiting on my mentorship. However, to our knowledge UoP never checked to verify our employment. -Matt
I guess my concern with saying that I'm self-employed as a consultant (or something, which I have actually done in the past with home-based ABA programs) is that I would then have to put that on my resume, wouldn't I? Or if I ever got to the phone interview portion, would I just say that I have taken an extended maternity leave, but that I'm looking to resume working as a consultant for ABA home-based programs? Maybe if this is a criteria then I just need to avoid UOP altogether... Sheesh, working online from home is perfect for moms with babies!
You really do not have to mention your maternity leave or anything. I know that when I picked up my online teaching gigs, I was asked if I had experience with working with non traditional adults and with online learning. Then they asked about my degree fields and if I had actually worked in the IT field.
Yes, if you want to work as a consultant, I'd say extended maternity leave and consulting and leave it at that. Working online IS perfect for moms and quite a few others too!
What do these people do about references? I am a little worried about this because I have 3 years experience as an independent day trader - not easy to verify. My other work experience is at two schools in Korea. One of the schools closed and the other is run by people who barely speak English.
