I'm helping a neighbor write her resume for a teaching position, and I'm wondering if it's appropriate to include a degree in progress that isn't related to the job opening.

She's applying to teach a basic computer course (Excel) and just started an M.S. Management program; is it appropriate to include this on the resume?

I would - it shows contining education. I always show my PhD in BA in progress even if I apply for a computer teaching position.

I agree, and it shows more synaptic connections :)

I also say yes. Just put "in progress" or "anticipated 20XX"

Bruce, I would include it. In my perspective, education shows proactive behavior and initiative. It shows employers that your not just sitting around doing nothing.

The absolute worst case scenario is the hiring committee disregards the MSM degree in-progress and looks solely at her other qualifications. In the best case scenario the hiring committee recognizes she is a life-long learner and in many cases that is one of the qualifications hiring committees want. I frequently see such postings for a local community college system in my area.

Now that there's a consensus, there's the next question.

I think I like "in progress" better, what does everyone think?

I have mine listed below since I kind of know when I plan to graduate.
    ·PhD - Business Administration / Management – Northcentral University – expected graduation - 2009

Early on, I did not have a clue when I was going to finish so I listed it as "currently enrolled"

She just started the program, so I think "in progress" it shall be.

    Thanks everyone!
