    Greetings to the MIGHTY FORUM~~~~

I was just parousing the discussion board and I find that Bill Grover, like myself, seems to have disappeared.

Bill, are you out there? How are you doing on your dissertation?

    Blessings,

    Chris

    Hi Chris

I found that spending lots of time here and at Ed's good theological discussion board ,despite the enjoyment derived from each , simply drew too much time and energy from my studies.

Today I just finished (in the rough) the fourth of six chapters. I really think I can do this. 11-04 is still my target date for completion so I can be graduated by my 65th BD in June of 05! Takes six months for evaluation I guess!

I'll read over what I've written in a chapter and say to myself, "My this is good." As you know I have a local reader, a prof, who's PhD is from Dallas TS and who is published in area of my dissertation.

Still it's up to my promoter, the dean at UZ, and theologians from two other SA universities to OK it upon completion. Sure hope they do!

    Thanks Dave.

BTW, Have you been on the huntAmerica discussion board (knowing your interests in 1911s)? They have a forum there discussing stuff like: African hunting, pistol shooting etc. Also, a forum discussing Christianity! Imagine that, Bible and bigbores!

Bill - It seeems that things are well with you. I'm glad to hear it. I'm just about at the point you've described - having to "get serious" and crank out some research. I admire your drive and hope I can achieve the same level of focus.

Haven't heard of it, but I will check it out promptly. Thanks, my friend!

P.S. You might enjoy Cooper's Commentaries sometime... AFTER you finish another chapter! :)

Blessings on your continued dissertation work, Bill. It's an inspiration to the whole board, I'm sure, that you are doing so much at one time.

I just finished my teaching credential at Point Loma. Will finish Excelsior hopefully by Nov.

Then, finally, I'll begin thinking about dissertation work. May pick up at BD through Spurgeon's first via DL. Maybe not. We'll see.

    Peace and blessings in Christ,

    Chris

Like Xenophon of old, the Colossus of the Drakensberg strides bravely toward the sea.
Like Xenophon, I'm sure he'll holler when he gets there. Onward, Bill! Te salutamus!

What a fine chap Bill Grover must be. When he's completed his studies we could perhaps start a 'pistol shooting forum'. I've been involved in target pistol shooting since 1966 and represented NZ for over a decade. My wife is also a competent pistol shooter and in between breeding brown teal we shoot pistols at least once a week. Nowdays we are both western action shooters and my Uncle and Jimmy (and Bill) will be somewhat amused to read that my western action alias is "THE VERY REVEREND DR HAYES". And in my clerical gear I've fooled many people - even conducted a real wedding at our western action national champs last year. (We did have a Magistrate along to sign the legal bits!)
Look forward to seeing you back in action Bill.

    Chris,

Thanks. Sounds like your education is progressing well too. I'm glad for you and anxiously await your decision re more theological ed. It would be so neat to be able to start over in making decisions re education. How'd you like Point Loma? I did!

As usual I went into spasms when I had to go back to teaching this Sept. You'd think as I've had to go back every Sept since '69 I'd get used to it by now, but nope!

    [I think whenever summer strays,
    something within me dies.
Joys once free come not easily
And God must close one eye.]

Each of these chapters takes sooo much time to do. Today I need to continue the proof reading of one finished in the rough for errors in references. I think I must go back and check to be certain that I have interpreted each of my references correctly, eg, Athenagorus,Cyril, Tertullian, Theodoret, Athanasius and about 125 others! That is, read those references over! Yesterday I found I had misrepresented one somewhat , so need to check each and every one. My Promoter hates sloppiness! Then I'll get that chapter to the typist Then have my conclusions based on Greek/Hebrew grammaticisms checked by my local reader as well as I am not really strong enough to be confident in these languages. This one also serves as a backboard off which to bounce my logic and theology. Then the chapter must go too to an English prof for proof reading. While I have a teaching credential in English, I still make some careless mistakes in this regard. Thankfully my English will be accepted though Americanized if I say, and I do, "I'd like to publish in the USA." I'll have the typist make corrections, then finally this chapter is done. As said , I have four of six in the rough. But this does not mean they are out of the oven yet!

Thanks for the encouragement. You and I have talked about this way of submitting a dissertation, all at once, not in pieces, and I found your comments helpful. You'll recall this was suggested by the Promoter as I'd mentioned I'd like to finish before I'm 65. Of course, there is still the worry that when I send in the five bound copies that it won't be acceptable. I'm doing my best to do my part to avoid that.

Nevertheless, I try to take extreme care and I compare my work regularly with literature in the field as journal articles and do not see it wanting. As my local reader has his doc from DTS, which school btw is esteem my Super tells me in South Africa, and is published does provide some assurance. Also the prof, as I think you said, would n ot allow this to be done in this manner were he not thinking I'd do OK.

    Pray for me my friend.

    Thanks for your kind remarks. I did not know you were clergy. My Th.D. dissertation is an attempt to show that those Amererican Conservative theologians are wrong who teach the eternality of Christ's role subordination to the Father. As role subordination is by some ontologically based on eternal generation, and it seems that would indeed be a corollary, I reject that ancient, nearly universal doctrine too. My methodology is to synthesize the supposed hierarchy in the Godhead into several cognate doctrines to evince role subordination to be incorrect. Unlike your doctoral product in waterfowl, I suppose mine will not be noticed much less used. I may even be wrong in my thesis, but as I'm 63 now , soon I expect to understand it all better by and by.{{sorry, just reread your post. You are not clergy? Sorry to blather, then, about my topic}}

I have done some informal pistol shooting with a couple of 1911 type guns. We'd shoot,eg, tiny suckers at 10 yards, 25 yards, and 50 yards. Actually, some of the guys shoot at a "running" target at 100 yards. But if I can hit a tennis ball at 75 feet with my 45 ACP, that's good enough for me. I know this is stupid, but I do not hunt. Probably this is two faced as I love steak! I might shoolt a local deer or elk were I intending to eat it! On another forum on African hunting the efficacy of various calibers on Cape Buffalo was being discussed. Extensive notes on penetration, tissue damage, and shock value of the several calibers and bullet types were displayed in pictures. I know these buffs are very tough guys and dangerous having gored many a hunter. But old Bill ended up nevertheless feeling sorry for the animal. I'm so stupid. I have two 375 mags and a 458, distincly big, dangerous game calibers, yet I'd probably not shoot a bear unless he was chasing me!. I like guns a lot. But after paying $10,000, if I had it, for a chance to shoot elephant or buff I would proably in the end say, "let the old boy live." Yet I frequently, legally, carry either a .45( my boy in Iraq, shortly before going , shot himself in the leg with the .45 I carry) or a .38 and I think under extreme circumstances I would likely use it. This is just me, I'm not saying hunting is wrong! BTY, "cowboy action shooting" is extremely popular in Oregon too.

    Well, back to work.

Hi Bill. Of Course. Also, it's AthenagorAs, not AthenagorUs. Glad things are proceeding apace.

Reminds me of the story of the new preacher in a rowdy town in the old west. He walked up to the pulpit amidst jeers, boos, catcalls, etc. He pulled a six shooter out, laid it on the pulpit and said, "This morning I can give you St. Peter or saltpeter, the choice is yours."
