I watched Arnold on the Factor, and I was impressed. I am still opposed to overturning an election especially after only a year, but if it is going to happen, I think that Arnold will win. Gray Davis has really brought this on himself, but he was freely elected and has not broken any laws that I have heard of.
There are allegations he took bribes. Overturning an election may not be good but I guess this may be a situation where the end may justify the means, I don't know. The recall law in California was conceived of by democrats-progressives. The Democrats tried to recall Reagan when he was Governor. Firing incompetence may not be a bad idea in politics. It's costly, I know. But, if the incumbent continues to drive the state deeper into bankruptcy...............
Right now Bustamante's leading by a pretty significant margin, but that could change if McClintock drops out and endorses Schwarzenegger (which would give him 38% of the vote, assuming all of McClintock's voters followed him). And there's still a good chance Davis could beat the recall--he was polling above 50%, last I checked. I remember reading that there has been a recall attempt against every California governor since 1911, but that Davis is the first to inspire enough petition signatures to actually bring about a vote. Davis' remarks about Arnold's not being able to pronounce the state's name may hurt him and Bustamante's former membership in a "racist" organization plus his taking contributions he said he wouldn't take might hurt him. I still think Arnold will win. I think in the end, people will see Bustamante as a continuation of Davis and McClintock's supporters will vote for Arnold at the last minute to keep the Dems out.

But California's state historian, Kevin Starr, termed this (not just the recall, but the state's budget crisis) California's greatest crisis since its founding. Who am I to disagree? --Orson
