If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. The grading slip from CCHS for papers has a section entitled "Formatting errors (-2 each)" To date, most of the points I have lost have been due to these. Usually it's the double spacing. I have tried and tried to correct it. I set it for double spacing but the final product is not consistently double spaced. Every paper wherein I received a "B" would have been an "A" had it not been for the loss of formatting points. Any suggestions? I use Microsoft Word 2000.

That is kind of strange issue to have. If it is set to 2x and some of lines are coming out 2x it would seem the program and its formatting are not the issue. Communication to the printer or paper slipping in the printer seem more likely. Is it possible to borrow a friend's printer and try it? Or, is it possible to hook your printer up to another computer and see if the issue remains?

    Info that would be helpful:
    OS?
    Program name and version?
Any other printers or other devices installed on same port?
    How printer is connected?
Any pass throughs such as zip drive, switch, cable extention?
    Brand of printer?
    Other symptoms you notice?

    Hi Dave,

My wife is the brains in the family on this stuff. I will get this info from her and get back to you. Thanks for offering to help.

    Okay, here goes.

    OS is ME
    Word 2000 9.0.2720
Printer connected by std. printer cable (not USB)
    No pass throughs
    HP DeskJet 610CL

At first the top and bottom margins weren't consistent throughout the documents. Them my wife went into the system and disabled the auto format. This seemed to do the trick. But, the double spacing is not consistent throughout. I click on the bar (?) for double space but, again, no consistency. The printer doesn't seem to have any problems grasping the paper. I am sure it's something in Word I am not doing right. Thanks again. I appreciate it. We have two computers, two printers. No matter which computer I use the same problem occurs.

Uncle Bill and his programmers obviously know best, so changing default settings when you make a change such as a cut and paste from other documents is a common problem.

Simple work around. Create the whole document with OUT worrying about detailed formatting.

When it is all done, go to edit then select all, then go to format then parragraph and then set all to 2x spacing.

Note, if you make any change you will probably have to do it over.

This comes about due to embedded format strings that do not show.

You're very kind to take the time to offer assistance. I will try this and let you know. I am expecting a new course within the next two weeks but I can type any document and perform a trial run. Thanks again.

I think Mike's got the right idea; type the whole thing without worrying about formatting and then deal with the d/s issue.

Tip: after you're finished typing, highlight the entire text, hold down the CONTROL button (Ctrl) and press the number "2" on your keyboard.

Good info in the previous posts. I agree it is the writing of the document not the printing. If Word is set to 2x space no need to hit enter or space. If it is set to 1x space then as suggested finish document, highlight all text and change to 2x.

Like the rest of the board is saying, here is the steps I would do.

    1. Complete the entire paper
    2. "Edit"
    3. "Select all"
    4. "Format"
    5. "Paragraph"
    6. "Doublespacing"

That should make the entire paper consistent.

If you want to send me an e-mail we can chat and walk through it.

I want to thank everyone for their help. I received my first paper back from CCHS since I used your suggestions. I received a 97 on an 18-page paper. The three points I lost were due to forgetting to indent one line on the reference page. I wish I had consulted you all earlier. I would have two "A's" and a "B" instead of three "B's." Although one of those "B's was 1/10th of a point from an "A." Thanks, again!
