I just got back from taking the GRE and forgive me for being a braggart (I'm so embarrased) but I just needed to to tell someone. In my wildest dreams I never thought I would as well as I did: 650 verbal, 800 quantitative!!! I don't complete my BS until 2005 and I was taking the GRE now so I would have time to take it again next summer. Unless my writing scores come back really bad (< 4) I think I can safely say I'm standing pat. Since my overall undergrad GPA will only be around 3.1 when I graduate, I really needed a good showing on the GRE. WOOO HOOO!!!!
Congrats. Are you now going to take the GRE Subject Exam in Computer Science? How can you estimate your GPA 2 years in advance? My master's was also in Artificial Intelligence (but brick-and-mortar).
Great job! Why don't use those scores to get a degree/credit at one of the big three, and transfer back to shorten your FSU degree? Just a thought. Check out BAin4weeks Regards, Scott
Because (1) Excelsior and Charter Oak award credit only for the GRE Subject Exams (Thomas Edison doesn't even award that), and what JoAnn just took was clearly the GRE General exam; and (2) other schools don't accept GRE-based credit in transfer.
I don't know if I will take the subject exam. Only one of the schools I am applying to even asks for it and for them it's optional. I will probably need to talk to the department and see what they recommend. As far as my GPA goes you are quite correct in stating that my GPA estimate might be wrong. I have already completed 127 semester hours and I have another 21 to go. I based my estimate on me getting a 4.0 the rest of the way out which isn't too unrealistic since I have a 4.0 in my last 50+ hours. As you can probably deduce, I didn't do very well when I first entered school over 20 years ago.
In that case, Scott has a point. Wouldn't you graduate sooner with a higher GPA from Excelsior or Charter Oak? They award 3-30 and 24 credits respectively for the Computer Science GRE; Excelsior grants further credits for Microsoft and other certifications; and you can ask for your lower-grade courses to be excluded. With (according to your résumé) 19+ years in software, you shouldn't be taking courses that you can test out of. Sorry to butt in with unsolicited advice. I'm sure you've already carefully weighed all the options. Congats again.
I actually had already looked at COSC, not because of my GRE but because I was checking out how much sooner I could graduate there than at FSU. However, I finally decided that I'm learning a great deal at FSU and I just didn't see an educational advantage to short circuiting my graduation.
I would graduate sooner (by a semester or two) from COSC (perhaps earlier at TESC or Excelsior) and my GPA is actually 4.0 from FSU. Of course, as you know the graduate schools I'm looking at want you to calculate your GPA based on all classes from all schools attended. Sadly, I wasn't prepared to be a student at the University of Tennessee and my GPA indicates that. (I had one somester that was 15 quarter hours of all Fs!!!) While I had exposure to most of the theory I'm learning at FSU, I like having the opportunity to really formalize my learning. Call me foolish, call me stubborn (just don't call me late...)
