Mike Leavitt has been the primary champion of Western Governor's University. Now he's off to Washington. I wonder whether this will affect the struggling WGU?

If there's "no shortage of critics", then what moves a reporter in Utah writing about a school in Utah to quote an iconoclastic curmudgeon in Canada?

She also got the title of his book wrong: it's Digital Diploma Mills: The Automation of Higher Education.

David Noble has been much discussed on this board. He apparently holds that any university, however reputable to begin with, becomes a diploma mill if it offers either vocational training or online courses:

"While the universities tried initially to distinguish themselves in both form and content from their increasinly disreputable commercial rivals, in the end, having embarked down the same path of commodity production, they tended invariably to resemble them, becoming diploma mills in their own right." -- David Noble,

"The people peddling this stuff are suggesting that distance learning offers a bona fide education," said David F. Noble, a history professor at York University in Toronto. "But it's a con job. This is a scam. Distance education is just a digital diploma mill." -- http://www.degreeinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2361

Mike Leavitt is one of the few politicians I actually like.
I have posted about his ideas a while ago, concerning competency based education in high school.
I have little doubt he will surprise some people while serving in his (if all goes well) new post. In a good way. ;)
