    Friend of mine is starting research on the topic of shyness. I already clued her in to Proquest for dissertations at

    Does anyone know of good sources for studies in the field of sociology?

    This isn't quite an answer to your question, but she might be interested in joining the Society for Personality and Social Psychology; they put out a really spiffy journal, and (as I recall) make individual articles/back issues available to members. I'm sure I've seen some research there on shyness.
