College Construction in U.S. May Hit Record Volume

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The din coming from college campuses this summer isn't from frat parties or football games, it's from jackhammers and bulldozers making way for new construction.

Driven by a booming student population, competition to attract students and low interest rates, U.S. colleges and universities are continuing last year's frantic pace of construction spending.

For the first six months of 2003, higher education institutions issued $12.3 billion in municipal bonds, according to Thomson Financial, nearly the same as the $12.4 billion issued in the same time period last year.
