Arnold has a DL degree?? He's certainly injected excitement into California politics. Let alone saved the world from nuclear terrorists (True Lies), evil wizards (Conan), robot armies (Terminator), alien big-game hunters (Predator) and Satan himself (End of Days). What other politician can say that?? (And the Democrats say that Arnold isn't qualified...) It's gotta be the DL.
Re: Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger I am sure if he can do all the above he can get CA back in the black, and get some electricity flowing.
Re: Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger This could be fun. A 6 foot 2 inch Austrian born Califonia Governor (with a 19 inch bicep). Just imagine how the democrats will react when he "punches out" some new legislation. I was under the impression that he attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior for his degree. It`s nice to see that he completed the program by DL. So now there are three tough guys in politics: (1) Jessie Ventura - Governor of Minnesota (2) Conan the Barbarian - candidate for Governor of California (3) Pee Wee Herman - Oval Office, Washington D.C.
Injecting a note of seriousness... I wonder how this will reflect on DL. We all know that this is going to be a very dirty campaign. Gray Davis is a master at smearing his opponents. We all know that Arnold's qualifications for office are going to be a big issue. The Dems have already telegraphed that. That means that the newspapers are going to be looking very closely at Schwarzenegger's education. So, how will the DL angle play out? Will DL get a boost from the fact that a very prominent figure has a DL education? Or will DL get a black eye as Davis' camp denounces Arnold's inferior "mail order degree"? So far, I have seen one reference to his degree in the local (SF Bay Area) press. They referred to his interdisciplinary major, which had something to do with the fitness business, but DL wasn't mentioned at all. There was no suggestion that the degree was in any way illigitimate, though it was implied that it might not be particularly relevant to the Governorship.
Rather interesting picture of Arnold at the Drudge Report: http://www.drudgereport.com/ Not sure how long it will be there!
I certainly hope this will not be the case, but would not put anything past the established incumbents smear campaigns. Politics are in the gutter now, and it is not about what you can do, or your ideas it is about how bad you can make others look. Where along the line did this country lose respect, and dignity? My grandfather says yes sir and yes ma’am to people half his age when he is at a store, or resteraunt. Find young people that do that today. The last ten years politicians on both sides have stooped real low, and I do not think they will be turning around soon.
I'm surprised he's decided to run. It's no big state secret that he has had more than a few "indescretions" in his married life. You know that will come up sooner or later. I don't know if Maria will be as forgiving. As to his qualifications, he has none. That doesn't necessarily mean that he would be a bad governor. My guess is, though, that he won't be a particularly effective governor because he's used to being the boss. The California legislature doesn't like being told what to do (whether you're a dem or a rep). Having said that, I suspect he will be the next governor of California. Shoot, he couldn't be any worse than Ronald Reagan (whose real strength was the whole vision thing, to be sure, but was an extremely poor day-to-day administrator; he left most of those tasks to others which is how things like Iran Contra happened). Most candidates tend to have strengths and weaknesses. If you can't see both, you need to look harder. And, no, having just blasted both Schwarzeneggar and Reagan in one post, I am not supporting Grey Davis. The nice thing about being non-partisan is that I don't feel the need to "take one for the team." Davis did this to himself. Tom Nixon
Re: Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger don't forget, he also made educational reforms (Kindergarten Cop) and is related to Danny DeVito (Twins)!
I think it was when Carter was President that a poll was taken of European leaders to ask which U.S. President they most liked. Nixon came out on top because they knew where he stood whereas other Presidents left them guessing.
I still think Nixon was one of the better US presidents. Ronnie was good too. The rest in the last 40 years are a lot of uninteresting blah.
Re: Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger As a resident of California, Ahhhh-nuld will get my vote! Hurry up! We have to get to the choppah! Veritas, Michael
Right. But, it is hard to separate the person from "the administration." It all depends on the people surrounding him. Love him or hate him, Ronald Reagan was effective at achieving his goals not because he was brilliant, but because he surrounded himself with brilliant (though perhaps maniacal) people. My guess is that Arnold would surround himself with good, smart people. Just a guess, though.
