The Roanoke Higher Education Center looks like a great idea. I had not heard of it before. A professor from one of my classes is associated with the center. Does anyone know if there are similar education centers elsewhere? "The Roanoke Higher Education Center is a collaborative project among 16 member institutions and agencies. The people of the Roanoke Valley, from high school age through retirement age, will be able to find programs that will give them a career start, a career boost, or a change in career direction. Whether through short-term training or the more lengthy pursuit of an advanced degree, individuals will have an opportunity to broaden their knowledge, skills, and interests in ways that will enrich their lives and the overall quality of life in the region. The Roanoke Higher Education Center is designed to incorporate state-of-the-art instructional, communications, and computer technology that will support distance learning as well as on-site instruction. Other features important to all students that will be particularly attractive to working adults include a technologically advanced library, a café, a lounge and study areas." http://www.education.edu/programs/ Partners: Averett University Bluefield College Blue Ridge Technical Academy College of Health Sciences Ferrum College Fifth District Employment & Training Consortium Hampton University Hollins University Mary Baldwin College Old Dominion University Radford University Roanoke College TAP/This Valley Works University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of Virginia Virginia Tech Virginia Western Community College Workforce Development Board http://www.education.edu/rhec.pdf
I like it too. The closest thing out here is an experiment using a community college as a remote site to host classes and programs offered by other schools. http://www.canadacollege.net/university/overview.html Canada College (a community college) currently hosts the following: San Francisco State University Child and Adolescent Development - Bachelor of Arts Business Administration - Bachelor of Science Teaching Credentials for Elementary and Secondary Schools California State University - Hayward Business Administration - Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, with an option in Business Studies (accelerated degree program) California State University - Monterey Bay Liberal Studies Distributed - Bachelor of Arts Golden Gate University Software Engineering and Network Integration - Bachelor of Science Your Roanoke Center looks a lot more ambitious, with 16 schools taking part rather than just four.
Yes, there are similar education centers in several different parts of Virginia. As a matter of fact, I have one right in my own home town of Abingdon, VA. I'm looking very seriously into a business program via Old Dominion University. Here is a link to the education center in Abingdon... http://www.swcenter.edu Cy
