I think Thunderbird is a great name.

For me, the worst name that comes to mind is "New School University." (Also a very presitigious school.)

I remember reading, in my youth, a reference in Time magazine to "Bob Jones III, President of Bob Jones University."

I called to my father, "Hey, Dad! Did you know there's a university in the US called Bob Jones University?"

My father, a full professor, didn't know.

"And guess what the president is called."

    "Er -- Bob Jones?"

Probably because Phoenix was already taken so they decided to use Thunderbird.
They would have been better of using the name Blue Jay U.:D

I think the name Thunderbird is cool.

Besides reminding old guys like me of Thunderbird cars and bottles of Thunderbird, the name Thunderbird has an American Indian connection that fits Arizona.

    Bad names?

    Dyke College. (No, not Mills)

    Maharishi University of Management

I used to hate the sound of Alliant International University (it sounds like a failed cell-phone company), but I'm getting used to it.

You never know what may happen with your name (as the President of once popular diet candy called Ayds might have said).

A Dean of Malcolm X College (Chicago) wrote that a (pink-skinned) job applicant, in the face-to-face interview, referred to "Malcolm the Tenth."

Thunderbird's "real" name is The American Graduate School of International Management. Thunderbird seems to have started as its nickname, but has since taken over as its more recognizable name.

Possibly, but I prefer to think that they took Thunderbird because Mad Dog 20-20 College and Ripple University were already taken.

And let's not forget the delightful (and, if memory serves, regionally accredited at the time) Flaming Rainbow University...

    But, alas, no longer operating.

(It was RA, and was operated by the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.)

It's too bad there isn't a Richard Nixon University, or better yet, The Bob Dole Institute of Technology. ;)

If there is ever a Budweiser University I should be first on the list for honorary doctorates, based on the millions of dollars I have contributed through the years.::cool:
