"In 1999, when Blair joined the Times as an intermediate reporter who would remain on probation until proving himself, the paper said everyone assumed he had graduated from the University of Maryland -- he had not -- and one editor soon told him he needed a more balanced lifestyle than drinking scotch and smoking cigarettes." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40536-2003May10.html I wonder, if the Times could have avoided this huge "black eye" if "everyone" did a little more than assume.
As I attempted to point out in other posts (mainly regarding John Davy) - you simply cannot believe everything you read in your newspaper; particularly in the NY Times and the NZ Herald!: Perhaps the former NY Times reporter will serve a prison term also?
