So, okay question time: What is written in the Old Testatment that Christ would be crucified and reborn (pre-ordained)?
--- Mike There seems to be a modest amount of historical, non Biblical evidence supporting the historicity of Jesus' crucifixion. Some of this includes the annals of Tacitus , the Antiquities of Josephus, and the satirist Lucian. Of course, even the existence of the church to some suggests that Jesus died by crucifixion. But was this death and its manner foretold in the "Old" Testament? Of course, this is the claim of the New Testament as in Acts 3:18, "The things announced before hand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ should suffer, He has thus fulfilled." But what prophecies could Peter have had in mind? There are several taken by the Church as applicable to Jesus Isaiah 53:5 is one, "He was pierced ( as by the spikes or as in the soldier's spear) for our transgressions." This has by some taken to have Israel, not Messiah, as its referent. Zechariah 12:10 , Psalm 22:16,18 are others. As far as I know, such do not specify the cross as the instrument intended for His death. The cross, a Roman method, was despised by the Jews (deut 21:23) who preferred stoning. Of course such views have been debated. I'm unsure what you mean by "reborn."

Here's a fine paper by Craig Blomberg that can be downloaded from this site (if I did this right!): Denver Seminary, "Interpreting OT Prophetic Literature in Matthew: Double Fulfillment" http://www.zondervanchurchsource.com/clip/2001convention/#papers Just click on the link, and an email to be sent will come up. All you have to do is send it; it's set to both go where it's supposed to and automatically send you the paper. Starkman
