    By now we've all heard about the idea of floating a degree higher than the Ph.D. because
    a) Ph.D's have become commonplace, or b) a new moneymaking gimmick is a good idea.

    One of the idiots who is actually impressed by floppy berets and garish party dresses at academic convocations has come up with the name "chancellorate" for this new bait (I mean degree). Apart from its risibility to anyone who speaks German, as the image of the auditioning "Hitlers" in "The Producers" movie comes to mind--"ja, I am ze chancellor", (singing) "I'm a chancellor and I'm OK", "I used to be a concierge but now I have my chancellorate", (more singing, falsetto) "I am the very model of a modern major chancellor"--the pompous term really should be awarded along with a $24.95 fambly crest or a dancing biker santa or, well, something else equally Orwellian.

    So we need a new name before this thing grows legs.

    Any suggestions?

    Sage, sagamore, griot come to mind (y'all want gravy with your griots?).

    I recall another thread that debated sainthood and knighthood in universities. What about Sainthood? If PhDs are commonplace in todays academia, then why not confer the title of "Saint" as a higher degree?

    :p Saint Janko - it kinda has a nice ring to it.....

    That's impossible, Roy, I'm Lutheran.

    And nobody had better accuse a Lutheran of being a saint.

    There has been talk of a C.Phil degree for years and has been discussed in degreeinfo.com before.

    Well.........if it's a moneymaking gimmick you want, then a law degree will do just fine....in North America an LLB is a license to print money.:D

    I could possibly finish a Chancelorette from the nursing home, assuming I don’t succumb to Alzheimer’s disease first. It would be a battle to see which I get first. :p

    Abnormal!

    To be quite honsest, only those people who are obsessed with titles and degree quals will even go with this thread! I sometimes despair here about some people who seem to spend their lives collecting qualifications, RA or otherwise. They have a problem! Donlt give me the case about expanding knowldege as a defence! Itr won't wash! Anyone can do all of that without having to take enddless doctoral programmes!.

    This should be interesting, I beleive a Chancelorette and a Chancellorate are two different things. If I tried to finish a Chancelorette, I think my wife woudl have something to say about it, but it would probably be a hole lot more fun than finishing a Chancellorate!

    Then I take it that 'Avatar' and 'Bodhisattva' are out too.

    It's hard pleasing you Lutherans, but we'll think of something.

    Bill: Those would be OK; it was just the "saint" thing.
    How about Trismegistus?
    If there were a trismegistus of philosophy you could defend your Tr.Ph.; but if it were a trismegist doctorate (as a "higher" doc) you might just wind up with a Tr.D.

    I've pointed out for years in Bears' Guide that at least holders of a Chancellorate won't have to worry about finding a job, since they'll be on social security by the time they get it.

    Another view, from the book "Epithetology" by Curtis A. Bartholomew, LL.B., J.D., LL.D., B.S., M.S., Sc.D., Consulting Epithetologist. The Commercial Press, Red Bank, NJ, 1948:

    "Postgraduate study must be encouraged and developed immensely during the 20th century.In order to stimulate this trend toward postgraduate study and to assist in assuring its permanent establishment, it is hereby proposed that a new educational degree be established and conferred upon those candidates who satisfactorily complete a supervised curriculum above the doctorate level. The degree of 'Regent' is recommended as the new proposed degree which is to be superior to the doctorate degree.

    "The general acceptance and establishment of this superior degree by American educational institutions will greatly stimulate postgraduate study and also place American education on equal par with foreign education. As certain foreign universities confer the degree of Doctor of the University as the superior degree to the doctorate, they are able to maintain an edge over our present degree level. Thus by the employment of Regent as the superior American educational degree, our degree scale will be elevated to equal foreign issue..."

    The author goes on for many pages, eventually proposing about 40 specific degrees including
    * Artium Regent
    * Agriculturae Regent
    * Educationis Regent
    * Divinitatis Regent
    * Ingenium Regent
    and so on.

    He suggests they would be popularly known as Regent of Arts, Regent of Agriculture, and so on.

    I would assume that the highest possible degree awarded would be the "Regent of Rigor Mortis". This could be bestowed on those students who die of old age.:D
