Blogger "elhombrelibre" in Rome rips France as the ultimate offender of humanity, "[ only she is] effete and nihilistic enough to be [so] obnoxious to liberty, humanity, and equality."

"Over the last 12 years, France more than any country broke the economic sanctions the UN had imposed on Iraq. France profited more than any country doing business with Iraq. France now says the US must obey that same UN. France functioned since the first gulf war as Saddam’s ideological hit man and used every opportunity to beguile the ignorant into believing we must remove Saddam’s Iraq from its pariah status as a rogue nation. France claimed sanctions hurt the Iraqi people too much. They did not mention that no nation has made more money in oil from Saddam and in effect done more to assure his dictatorship survived. And no nation has shown more concern for crass commercialism and contempt for the Iraqi people than France. France’s record is so sordid that one shudders and realizes that France has been led by cynics as jaded by right and wrong as Saddam himself.

"France’s past and present weave so well together that one fears the national character never changes.

"France fought to maintain its colonial power in cruel ways long after it was capable and in ways that showed contempt for any Just War theory.

"Yet, it was France that barely fought for its capital in WWII, reached a quick arrangement with Hitler, collaborated with him to the point that the French betrayed and rounded up Jews during WWII so Hitler could kill them, and fired on American troops as they liberated North Africa.

"It was France, after all, that sold Saddam a nuclear plant knowing full well he intended to use that plant to make nuclear weapons, which he then would have used to destroy Israel. Only Israel’s foresight and courage prevented France’s treacherous collaboration in that case. Israel knows malice when it sees it. Israel doesn’t seek France’s permission to survive.

"It is France that blew up Green Peace’s unarmed Rainbow Warrior and yet pretended in these last few weeks that force can never be used as anything but a last resort!

"It is France that jumped into Ivory Coast, mucked up the country by insisting those in power share it with Islamic gangsters, and lectured the US on the dangers of unilateralism almost simultaneously in these last few weeks.

"Until just yesterday, it was France that blocked NATO from sending defensive missiles to Turkey to safeguard that NATO ally should a war breakout with Iraq. But as soon as NATO had a forum without France present, even Germany and Belgium agreed with all the other nations in NATO that Turkey could have these defensive measures.

Comment: Kinda makes Official US hypocrisy look tame.

Orson: Thanks for mentioning what those neocolonialist soft on Islamo-fascism bastards did in Cote d'Ivoire.

Those French "neocolonialist soft on Islamo-fascism bastards" were responsible for evacuating the Americans trapped in several northern Ivory Coast cities, weren't they?

The French were there with the agreement of the Ivory Coast government. The rebels seized half the country and despite talking tough, the local army showed no interest or ability in engaging them. Some desultory shelling, and then running away when combat threatened. The French were in no mood to fight their war for them, and most of the surrounding states were calling for a negotiated settlement. So one was hammered out and the Ivory Coast president signed it. Unfortunately the accord was very unpopular with the southern Ivory Coast street who believed (perhaps rightly) that it conceded too much to the rebels. So the accord collapsed and the crowds blamed the French, leading to the recent demonstrations in Abidjan.

I'm not sure what the alternative is now, except a civil war that the Ivory Coast army seems unprepared and unwilling to fight. That seems to me to be a recipe for disaster. What was once the most successful country in West Africa seems poised to collapse into Liberia- or Sierra Leone-style anarchy, and rebels from those failed countries are already entering Ivory Coast in hopes of picking up some of the spoils.

If the Ivorians won't compromise but won't fight for themselves, they are probably lost unless an outside power intervenes. But I suspect that the French will prove not to be "neocolonialist bastards" to nearly the degree that the situation requires.

Now Chirac is lecturing the "eastern" Europeans for being uppity and not knowing their place. Yowzah, massa Jacques. It's that ole Galling, I mean Gallic charm. If the other countries in the French sphere in west Africa weren't fostering Islamo-fascist terrorism, there would not have been a problem in CdI to begin with. Liberians? The French stole chunks of Liberia in 1892 and 1911--now in Guinea and CdI. The nihilist empire of the Quai d'Orsay never ceases to amaze and appal.
Ecrasez l'infame (as Voltaire put it).

Writing in the Los Angeles Times...

(16 February 2003), Jonah Goldberg apparently agrees:

"Indeed, there's almost no criticism of the United States that doesn't apply with greater or equal force to France. The French are certainly willing to trade blood for oil, just so long as it's not their own. And if it's true to say that America helped 'create' Hussein, it's doubly accurate to say it of the country that sold him a nuclear reactor. The only difference between the two countries is that America is eager to correct its mistakes while France is entirely at peace with letting Hussein continue murdering and terrorizing his subjects and neighbors."
