After appearing for the required tests Sanjeevi was cleared to join the MBA degree programme at the University of Chicago. He chose Hospital Administration as his speciality, and though it was a dramatic shift in career choices, Sanjeevi was clear in his mind about his calling.

"It was a memorable time at the University," states Sanjeevi. "India's freedom struggle had reached its culmination, and American students too were very excited when India got her independence. They were watching a replay of how their country achieved freedom from British rule."

Sanjeevi studied hospital administration for a year, after which he did a one year internship at the prestigious Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago. This gave him practical insights into the running of a big hospital and he absorbed all the details needed to later run CMC Vellore. His three years in the United States also gave him a multi-cultural insight into the treating of patients, and building up a hospital to high standards of professionalism.

On his return to India, Sanjeevi was deluged by a flood of offers as news spread around that he was an MBA degree holder from the USA, and the first Indian at that. Many prestigious hospitals asked him to join them at fancy salaries. But Sanjeevi did not even entertain any temptation, joining CMC Hospital Vellore on 1 July 1950 as Administrator. He worked in that capacity for 25 years, developing the 350 bedded hospital to a 1200 bed hospital when he retired in 1974; CMC became India's most professionally run hospital and medical college with an enviable infrastructure.

"I would say that the doctors at CMC were responsible in making it a pioneering institute," remarks Sanjeevi. "Their dedication and team effort enabled CMC to grow to such a huge hospital.Ó He explains that his MBA degree was of immense help to him in his career. Today, CMC offers the same courses that he studied in the USA.
