We've all gotten that email. :D

And we continue to get it. :(

The first time I got that email a couple of years ago, I called the number out of curiousity. A woman with a British accent answered the phone.

    Scam!!!

I get that exact same message every other day, but as one of those annoying messenger popups. Does anyone know how to tweak windows to prevent that? I don't want to pay $20 for a program to do it for me.

You may have spyware and you may want to get a program like Spybot to remove it. I've used it without any problems and it is free.

Thanks for the tip! I used that program, and it works great. The messenger pop-up exploits a vulnerability in Windows XP, and is not caused by spyware, and there are no free programs to disable it.

You can remove the pop-ups two ways. The easiest is to disable automatic scripting (go to "tools", hit "internet options", then "Security" and "custom level" and then scroll down to "scripting" and disable the "active scripting" command. That will stop the pop-ups, but may cause some difficulty with websites that have a lot of banners.

or, you can go to www.analogx.com and download the "POP" program and install it. it is free and works fine.

I believe these 'pop-ups' take advantage of the messenger service built into XP. I don't think that changing settings affects this. Does analogx's program fix this? (Analogx, by the way, has some very cool music effect software, as well as some interesting music in his own right. It used to be on MP3.com, although I haven't checked lately.)

Thanks for the tip, Wes; I installed a firewall (ZoneAlarm), and that stopped the messenger popups.

I agree with Myoptimism, analogx does have some cool software! I am editing some AV files for some CBT modules at work, and this will make it fun!
