Yesterday a Sikh terrorist, convicted of the killing of 329 people aboard an Air India flight 15 years ago, was sentenced to 5 years in jail.

A 5 year jail sentence in Canada normally means serving between 1.67 and 3.33 years in jail. Talk about return on investment.

As the bomb maker, he was apparently unaware that bombs could actually hurt people, so he was convicted of manslaughter.

So you don't get the impression that our justice system is lenient, if I make a mistake filling out my national gun registration form I could get 10 years in jail. Why should we worry about a bomber when we have millions of real criminals to worry about.

If I'm caught by the police for urinating on this terrorist's grave, I can be fined $1,000 and be sentenced to 200 days of community service. I think the return on investment is well worth it.

Well actually, if you are convicted, you may serve between 4 and 7 years. When you are released, it will be highly unlikely that anyone will want to hire you (an ex-convict).

On the other hand, if this terrorist gets any more publicity......he may very well get his own talk show when he gets out of jail in 1.3 years!

This was a stupid penalty. I mean, even if the role of the guy was to simply supply the explosives for others to commit this evil act, he should have been given 5 years for each death caused by his neglegence, to be served consecutively (329 charges of "criminal neglegence causing death" x 5 years per charge = 1,645 years in jail--even with the "faint hope clause," the earliest he could get out would be 1,096.67 years--in other words: NEVER), not the lame a*s concurrent method favoured by many judges.

And had this person been tried in the U.S., he would have received the death penalty (and justly so). We really need to get our act together up here
