    North Dakota:

The last state to ratify legislation regarding motorcycle helmets and seat belts, as well as the last to allow businesses to open on Sundays. How proactive of us to consider outlawing fake degrees.

In reality, ND has very strict standards relating to higher education. Many reputable institutions have been unsuccessful in gaining permission to hold extension classes in our state.

From the heart of North America (ND contains the geographical center of the continent),

This proposed law relates not to operating schools or extension services in ND, but using a degree purchased from a diploma mill elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see how they define diploma mill.

The article suggests that the main motivation was the fact of the "degree in 12 hours" Concordia University, of Dominica, was apparently being confused with the real Concordia, which, being very close to ND, attracts ND students.

Sorry, John; I didn't mean to imply that this legislation relates to the establishment of schools or extension centers. I mentioned that issue merely as an example of the reality that we seem to take credible higher education very seriously here. I can understand why Concordia would be a focal point of contention in this discussion. It enjoys the strongest reputation of any private institution in ND/Western MN.

At present, "The bill defines as a diploma mill any institution that is not accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or by a foreign equivalent." It should be interesting to see whether this definition is retained.

How far would SD take this concept?

    Degree in 12 hours?
    Degree in 12 days?
    BA in Four Weeks?
