This board has always been helpful when it comes to giving advice on research so I'm hoping this question isn't too difficult!

I'm looking to carry out some attitudinal research where I'd like members of the public to complete a web-based questionnaire. The research is about harassment but the questionnaire is open to *everyone* because I need to gather some additional data about demographics, etc. Incidentally, the research is based in the area(s) of criminology/social sciences/psychology.

The problem I have is in identifying places to advertise/promote the questionnaire so that I can get a reasonable number of respondents. Can anyone recommend any web sites that will effectively advertise the research for me? I vaguely recall a site that allowed people to list surveys, etc. so that members of the public could come along and fill them in. Alternatively, does anyone know of any newsgroups or other resources that I might use? The important thing is that the questionnaire needs to be completed by people from variety of backgrounds, for example not just people who have been harassed, or academics. This is why I can't target, say, newsgroups dealing with criminology.

    Thanks in advance.

It's difficult to respond to your questions because the parameters of your research aren't entirely clear. For example, if you're trying to reach members of the general public then the internet isn't the best place to start. While many more people have access to the internet now, it continues to be primarily populated by guys with enough money (which often means education)and leisure time (which also often means education)to be surfing around answering random surveys on subjects not directly related to them or their experiences. Aside from this, I have a couple of suggestions.
    1) Go to yahoo.com. At the top of the page there is a link that allows you to place a free advertisement. You could try that.
    2) You can crospost to 100 newsgroups almost as easily as you can post to 1.
    3) You can set up your own web site related to your survey and, if you're prepared to drop a few bucks, pay off a few of the major search engines to list your web site in response to inquiries of various sorts.
    Good luck,
    Jack
