A. Ok, it is an overly simplistic question, but what do people see as the top 5 goals of undergraduate education? Here is my try. 1. To think critically and accurately. 2. To write clearly and precisely. 3. To form a general understanding of the world viewed historically, from the Science point of view, and Humanities point of view. 4. To be exposed to ideas outside of your own background. 5. To learn how to interact reasonably and responsibly with others. B. If these are the major goals of an education which are best served by a DL education and which with a traditional one? Many thanks for any replies.
DL Goals vs Traditional Dave, I accept part "A" of your post. Given part A, I see nothing here that cannot be achieved by either traditional or DL delivery. Dick
I'm not certain what I'd use as a substitute (maybe something to do with employment?) but I believe that #5 would be more appropriately listed as a goal of elementary school education, not college. Jack
Interesting... "3. To form a general understanding of the world viewed historically, from the Science point of view, and Humanities point of view. "4. To be exposed to ideas outside of your own background. ------- Part 4 used to be the objective of distribution requirements. So--should DL distribution requirements be increased? I think it's an easy case to make... Without increasing 4, how can Part 3 ever hoped to be achieved with any reliable degree of uniformity? Alternatively, the requirements could be made more specific--more math, science, English, and history for any degree. Therefore, I would double the depth requirements of an Excelsior bachelors degree. (AND of B&M degrees, too.) --Orson
Frankly, I believe the most common goal was left out. To receive the paper that certifies you as a college graduate. Tony Unfortunately to some.
