Interesting article by J.J. Tillman in the NEA Higher Education Journal: Online Education: '76 Trombones and a Big Parade'. A little Dreyfus-esque for this board. But worth reading. Snippet: ... Merely reading a book, watching a videotape, or thinking really hard about a subject is not enough. One must be socialized into the community of knowledge to become truly educated, whether in music or anything else, and that seems to be something online education, more often than not, has a difficult time providing. Tillman also wrote an article entitled "The Fractured Mind of Partisan Church-Related Institutions of Higher Education," which sounds interesting (though I have not read it).
Haven't seen the other one either, but I'll bet it's interesting, considering the topic and the publisher.
