It looks as if post #50,000 will be made in the next day or so. Since the proprietors of DegreeInfo seem not to have responded to the suggestion that something be offered to said poster, let's do this:

The new cookbook Marina and I have done, Not Your Mother's Cookbook: unusual recipes for the adventurous cook, just arrived from the printer two days ago (having been tied up in the west coast dock strike for over a month). A half dozen or so members of this forum either contributed recipes, title idea, or did some recipe testing (and they'll be getting free copies).

So then: an autographed copy of said book, to he or she who makes the post numbered 50,000.

(The book is described on the publisher's site, at www.slgbooks.com. It unexpectedly ended up with quite a fine cover by Stanley Mouse, the man who did most of the Grateful Dead posters and album covers in the 70s -- and who has just sued Disney and Pixar for zillions for, he says, swiping his lovable walking green eyeball for their Monsters, Inc. film).

I'll have you know, sir, that the fine folks at Disney do not "swipe" things. In the true spirit of Microsoft, everything is already theirs, even if someone else thought of it, even if no one has yet thought of it. So there.;)

  3. How are we going to know which specific post is number 50,000? The "postid" is already over 55,990 so we can't use that.

    John,

If I make post # 50,000 could I possibly trade in the cookbook for a genuine made-in-India Dalai Lama T-Shirt? Probably less chance of getting sued by the Dalai. ;)

Gert: "How are we going to know which specific post is number 50,000? The "postid" is already over 55,990 so we can't use that."

John: Oh. Hmmm. I have no idea. No, wait, I have one idea. The opening screen shows the total number of posts (currently about 120 shy of 50,000), and the most recent post (with time, to the minute) in each of the five fora.

It is now about 2 hours from bedtime, this Sunday night. I shall keep that screen up, and refresh with some regularity, and at least there is a chance that when the "50,000" appears, I will note it, and also see which is the most recent of the five "most recent posts" shown.

If it happens between 10:30 pm Pacific time and my Monday morning, then I guess I've failed (unless someone else is wacky enough to stay up and do this exercise).

John: Are you suggesting that the cookbook will get you sued? I'm not clear on that concept.

But you do seem obsessed by this Dalai Lama T-shirt, and you don't even know what it looks like, or what it says.

Bright red. Front has his 'logo' and the small words "Never give up"

    Back says:

    Never give up
No matter what is going on
    Never give up
    Develop the heart
Too much energy in your country
    is spend developing the mind
    instead of the heart
    Be compassionate
    Not just to your friends
    but to everyone
    Be compassionate
    Work for peace
in your heart and in the world
    Work for peace
    and I say again
    Never give up
    No matter what is happening
No matter what is going on around you
    Never give up.

Well, I'll be up, but the math is too hard. Besides, I have to telephone several people in South Efrica and annoy them...first thing in their morning.

John: I'll be glad to call people in South Efrica and annoy them, in your name, while you pay attention here. (Any particular people? Are you familiar with Louis Luyt, the former phosphate and current rugby king, and, I believe, MP, who has gotten much criticism because of his Columbia Pacific University doctorate.)

The litigation remark was made in jest, based on Mr. Mouse's lawsuit against Disney.

My fascination with the Dalai Lama T-shirt is this:

    DL=Dalai Lama
    DL=Distance Learning

Could this DL/DL similarity be the sole reason the XIV Dalai Lama is currently in exile? That is, to subliminally reinforce the idea of DL to the new millennium?

Just a little bit of fascination! ;)

John: As E.B. White replied, to virtually all mail he received at The New Yorker, you may be right.

I'm afraid the chap in question (Mr. Gyatso, not Mr. White) is generally known in Buddhist world as "HH" not "DL."

And a search for www.HH.com produces a law firm in Los Angeles. What's going on here!

Dr Bear: I've heard of Louis Luyt, but did not know about his, um, DL connection.

Don't need the cookbook, but if you want to come over and cook dinner for a week or two.

John: You betcha. We need a test venue for our forthcoming "Traditional Norwegian Squid and Herring Desserts" cookbook.

While that does sound quite revolting....

Here is Estonia, they have a sort of Russian soup that is cold. It is made with flavorless yogurt (jogurt, here) and filled with fish, vegetables, etc. It is extremely vile, in my opinion. Sorry, I don't remember the name of it, but it is the only nasty soup here. All the others, that I have tried, were excellent..

BTW, when I looked, there were still 95 posts to go to reach the magical number...

Tere, Clint: Could it be seljanka? That was a nonwonderful Russian fish soup we had in Latvia two years ago. The only soup we had in Estonia was leivasupp, which was a lovely hot fruity soup.

But that's not what I called in about.

Congratulations, Dennis Ruhl, for posting message number 50,000. Gert was one minute (or less) too early, with #49,999.

Let me know where to send your free copy of Not Your Mother's Cookbook: unusual recipes for the adventurous cook."

Gert: I owe you a book for your correct answer(s) to my fall puzzler, and you've never squawked. Will you allow me to adjust my karma by sending you one of these cookbooks as well?

    Dr Bear

    I emailed my address.

Thank you very much. I do much cooking and always need new ideas.

Today was a holiday and I stopped ay my office to do a few things on my way from out of town and happened to check in.

    Thanks John

That does sound vaguely familiar... I think you are right about the name, though you are very gracious by calling it "non-wonderful." But, I always figure you have to try something at least once.

My favorite soup here is a national soup, made from beans and vegetables. It is also very hearty. Anyway, enough about soup for now.
    Congrats Dennis...

  20. I had fourteen posts all queued up and I started submitting them when the total got to 49,986. But the system only accepts them at 60 second intervals. So Dennis sneaked in and grabbed the victory! In any case, congratulations Dennis.

Thank you for the kind offer, John. I do vaguely remember a contest -- I shall have to do a search to remind myself!
