I think Gert is correct. According to this publication Hesburgh, with 148, held the Guiness Book record for the most honorary doctor of humane letters degrees (as of March 2002).
The last figures I saw (somewhere; don't have notes) were that Hesburgh had 148 and the King of Thailand 152. But I think that was before last June's silly season. When I did a Google search just now for "honorary doctorate king of thailand" there were 1,160 hits. Of course there are multiple references, but my hunch is that old Phumiphol is in the lead. And I still think that if Bob Hope lasts until birthday #100 (next May 29) , he may well (by some prearrangement) be showered with 100 honoraries, to go with the approximately 100 he already has.
