  1. NCST plans to tap India's e-learning potential.

    Snippet:
    • India's share of the online learning pie is just crumbs at present, but the sector has immense potential in this resource-poor but imagination-rich country of one billion people. To harness this potential, India's National Centre for Software Technology (NCST) has announced plans to host a global conference on online learning called Vidyakash-2002 from December 15-17 in Mumbai. ...

The NCST conference will focus on learning environments, Web-based teaching methodology, learner support, instruction delivery, learner modelling, faculty development for online learning, virtual universities, course-ware engineering and other related issues ...

Thanks for the good news. This might open up some good universities in India to start their DL Programs to the world like University of southern Queensland in Australia. I am eagerly waiting to see those days !

A couple of years ago, I half-jokingly proposed to write a book for Ten Speed--titled The Best-Kept Secret in Andhra Pradesh--detailing Indian distance learning programs, of which there are hundreds, all semi-undocumented because nobody seems to be sure which are only available to Indian residents, do not offer English-language instruction, etc.

I did contact Madurai Kamaraj University in Tamil Nadu, and they offer MANY bachelor's and master's programs to residents of India and the Middle East, but do not extend their programs to the U.S. yet because, the representative explained, they have no U.S. agency. (They do have agencies in India, the UAE, and several other locations.)

I briefly entertained the idea of doing my Ph.D. through Benares Hindu University, but didn't follow through. That might be a good candidate for my second doctorate, 15-20 years down the road. Another school worth considering for Ph.D. studies is Gujarat Vidyapeeth, the university Gandhi founded in the 1920s.

Folks who want to take up where I left off on researching Indian distance learning programs (as it's unlikely that I'll be doing any in-depth work in the field of distance learning over the next year or two) may wish to start with the ICDL database:

Manjunath et al.: I hope Indian DL flourishes and includes enrolment from the US. It would certainly enrich the options, and the possible contribution in my own area of interest (religious studies) could be enormous. I have a question about Indian academic culture. In your experience, are Indian professors amenable to the one-on-one give and take needed for DL grad studies and dissertation/thesis supervision?

Ohhh,,,,,,,, I am still looking for a distance learning doctoral degree in India. I understand from academic in Bangalore that at the end of this year, there will be distance leanring program on offer,,,,,, I am still waiting.... ...waiting. I am choosing between South Africa and India. It seems to me India is better as my trip to India is only a few hours.

Please keep me posted on new development. 10-Q
