Hello, Here is a site a friend shared with me for the cheapest textbooks....(www.addall.com). Hope this isn't a repeat of previous information. Hille

My usual strategy these days: Check Half.com, and if the price looks a little high, check BookFinder to see if an independent bookstore has it cheaper (often one does--I got Hartshorne's Omnipotence and Other Theological Mistakes for $6 by purchasing it from an indie; the cheapest Half.com copy at the time was something like $15). For my research on an upcoming book--the Mikhail Gorbachev volume in the Gale Group's People Who Made History high school anthology series--I was able to get practically all of Gorbachev's 1980s speech anthologies at 75 cents a volume.

If you need to use an expensive textbook, but only one chapter, or only for a week or so, interlibrary loan is another very good option.

    Cheers,

I hadn't seen that one before, thanks Hille. Another good one is the mySimon book search. There's a link on the left that will also let you search by ISBN. BookFinder looks like it's improved since the last time I tried it, thanks Tom.

For next semester I ordered two used books from Barnes & Noble. Both books arrived in great shape - one shows almost no use except for a very minor stain on the page edges, and some pencil markings in one chapter, and the other is almost as good as new with just some minor scuffs on the outer cover. B & N usually has coupons (I got $5 off one and $10 off the other), and if you go through the link on the Discover card site you get an additional 7% cashback rebate credited to your card. Plus shipping is free if you order 2 items or more, so I added a cheap clearance item to each one when I ordered.

Just today I ordered a new book through an "Amazon merchant." We'll see how that goes, but it was amazingly cheap for a new book (about $15 less including shipping than a used version from Barnes & Noble, not counting discounts), so I figured that it was worth trying. Hopefully I won't have any problems with it, though Amazon did charge me $2 more than what was indicated on the checkout screen for shipping. As long as it's new and arrives before the course starts then I'll be happy.
