To avoid any further e-mails (8 at last count) about why it no longer says "Administrator" next to my name (you nosy people, you), I thought I'd post a brief explanation.

I am in the process of cutting back in several areas. In addition to no longer moderating here, I have given up moderating a listserve (which I've moderated for over 5 years) as well as other things. I'm also cutting back on outside teaching (apart from my day job).

I've been doing one of those life re-evaluations and decided that I'm involved in too much and would prefer to focus on only 3 areas (and in this order):

    1. family
    2. the day job
    3. writing

Giving up moderating does not mean that I will disappear. I will likely post as much as always, but have given up the "need" to be here (and made it a "want" when there's time). As you are all aware, we have some truly exceptional people now moderating and Chip riding herd (albeit sometimes having to herd cats - better him than me!!!), so the need for me has also decreased.

And thanks for the interest in my life! If you do need to find me and I'm not here regularly enough, try [email protected].

Is being a moderator or administrator similar to being an adjunct? Can you be a moderator with just a masters degree?

    ;)

    Tom,

Are you sure you aren't opting out before we find out about the Trinity College & University doctorate you're working on? ;)

Hmm, guess we wont have Tom Nixon to kick around anymore. Thought I read a piece by you in an online training magazine some while ago. As I recall it was informative and particularly well written. An accompanying photograph portrayed a bespectacled, hirsute individual of wistful countenance (a trait common among Fresno-ites) . . . but, perhaps it was not you.

Best wishes in your other endeavors.

    Re: you have a life!!!

Yes, I've discovered that having a life is a very good thing. When, in a week, I send off the manuscript for my latest book that will also be a very good thing.

A little break and then on to the next...

Don't know about an online training magazine, but the picture does sound quite familiar.

Thank you for your wishes. It is amazing how much time you can re-discover in your life if you focus on what is most important.

I'm glad to hear it, Tom. It's always good to focus on what's really important in life. (Family and good friends.) Too many people wait too long to figure that part out.

In my book, this is one of the best things about distance learning. DL means less time away from home traveling to classes and sitting in lecture halls. Even with that said, I've been concerned with how much time I might have to spend away from my family if I decide to pursue a Ph.D. Will all that time writing a dissertation pay off in the end? Not financially or job-wise. I mean, in the grand scheme of life. Something for us all to think about, I suppose.

    Good luck with the book!
