Are there any privacy setting or things I should be aware of?

Yes. Do a little reading first. It's low risk though if you start out with the strictest security settings the only people who can see anything are the ones that you allow to be your "friends." But, regardless of security, you shouldn't put stuff out there that you don't want people to see. No addresses, no phone numbers, etc. You don't even have to use your real name.

People frequently start by looking up old friends from college or high school. Lots of famous people have facebook pages and if you "follow" them you can find out what they're doing. When is my favorite singer coming to town, etc. Lots of companies have facebook pages and so you can look up specific goods or services. There are people who will try to con you too. I thought it was funny the first time I was contacted by a girl who was willing to sell me some naked photos of herself. Mostly though it's just a way to connect with people who have common interests. Lots of colleges have pages, groups for people collect stuff, pretty much anything you like.

I have a Facebook page (under my real name), it's been very useful to keep in touch with my uncle & cousins in Florida, my HS classmates (I went to HS in Virginia), Army buddies, and childhood friends. I just don't take it too seriously, and don't put anything on there that I would care if it landed on the front page of the local newspaper.

    tagging

If I tag a picture, does it go to the persons wall or my wall? So confused. I tagged something but I don't know where it went!

So long as you don't share anything on Facebook that you wouldn't mind reading in the newspaper, you should be fine. (And when you really think about it, realistically that's actually a decent amount of stuff, at least for most people. I think people tend to exaggerate the likely harm.)
