The US higher education system is composed of over 3,000 units.
This makes the US unique in all the world of higher education.

This imposes a higher order of knowledge for its consumers in order to make any informed selection.

(In addition, the fact that US students are expected to contribute substantial sums towards their costs merely functions to motivate consumers here, more than other countries, to personally define "satifaction," and therefore accumulate knowledge of thier options.)

Does this burden make US higher ed better or worse?
    DEBATE!

You really need to quantify and qualify that position a little bit. A better guide point would be the number of higher education providers by type per capita and compare it to another location such as the UK or OZ. this would also need to separate by Community College and above. Because the argument could be raised that the US Community College system functions like the last year of high school in other countries as an optional point.

Then a comparison of the different levels and how they server their clients (students) would be helpful.

A more critical discussion (which I realize we do here constantly) would be the openess of the US system which allows anyone to start and run a "college" or "university" and award degrees wteher they are a huckster from lousiana or Caterpiller Tractor or a religious group.

The last part of your remarks was directed to cost. This point a I beleive you are wrong. Any one can get a very good education for a minimal cost. Here in California a degree from the UC system can be had (with 4+years study) for as little as $5000 - excluding livining expenses!. A AA or AS degree can be obtained (with 2 years study) for as little as a $1000 (again excluding living expenses).
