    This really isn't political, so that's why it's not in the Political Discussions section.

    There are 2 declared candidates for the mayoral election in Boston, the incumbent Mayor Marty Walsh, and City Councilor Tito Jackson. I was looking over their campaign websites, and although both have graduated from college, they seem almost embarrassed by it. Marty Walsh is a Boston College graduate, but it's almost a P.S. on his website;

    Meet Marty | Mayor Marty Walsh

    Meanwhile, Tito Jackson completely excludes that he is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he was Student Body President;

    Meet Tito | Tito Jackson for Mayor of Boston

    I just found this very curious, as there seems to be a couple of stories every year of politicians or candidates misrepresenting their educational credentials, or claiming degrees from diploma mills, and here are 2 that either downplay or don't mention legitimate degrees from good schools.

    I'm wondering if this is to appeal to the blue-collar base of voters in Boston? It might make for an interesting psychological or sociological project.

    Ah, he's a different Tito Jackson. But you made me look.

    More than a few politicians with legitimate doctorates don't use them in public: Newt Gingrich, George McGovern, Woodrow Wilson, Condoleezza Rice, Robert Gates, current senators Tammy Duckworth (Capella!) and Ben Sasse, etc. etc. I have wondered if it might have something to do with thinking that people don't want to vote for someone they think is smarter than they are.

    It can seem pretentious. Not to get personal, but getting personal, you are not presented as Dr. John Bear in this forum.

    Dr. Bear: By gum, you're right. No wonder I don't get no respect. Actually there used to be times when I would use just my M.J., which I believe some people thought had something to do with law. It is the uncommon "Master of Journalism,' which Cal gave for a few years when too many "MA in Journalism" students were flunking the then-required-for-all-MA-stdents foreign language exam.
