Boy, talk about having a bad day. Today is my birthday, and I had to have one of my dogs put down. It's for the best though, she was in pain. :(

2016 was a hard year for dog euthanasia in my family. My younger son's family had to say goodbye to both of their very old, much-loved dogs last summer. One was so old nobody knew his birth year - not even his previous family. We figure he was around 8 when he was adopted, so that made him at least 20. My older son's family lost their late-adopted dog last fall. They'd had him for several years, when he suddenly fell very, very ill.

It was my birthday (74) this week too. (Tuesday). I get my party tomorrow. Kids, grandkids and hopefully no euthanasia for me. I get to watch my youngest grandchild (8) at a "Ninja Competition." Hai! Should be fun.

A better if not happy birthday to you.

Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

    Happy birthday.

Do make a fool of yourself at the party; the kids will love it. ;-)

Sorry Abner, I hope things get better for you soon.

I saw a thing on social media, "In my darkest time, I reached for a helping hand, and received a paw".

Thanks! I like that! I thought of you a couple of weeks ago. I was in Petco, and this guy had a Mastiff that was HUGE! I am guessing he must have weighed around 200 pounds? I have no idea how much a dog like that weighs, but he weighed more than me. Then I saw the owner take the dog out to his truck. He had a camper shell in the back, and put up a special ramp so the dog could climb up in to bed of the truck. I guess a dog like that won't fit inside!

Years ago, I was at the vet's, and four big guys had to carry in a Mastiff. It seems like he was passed out or something, and he was basically dead weight! For being so big and kind of mean looking, they sure are gentle.

    Just a reminder

If you are considering getting a dog, please remember there are plenty of good dogs available at rescues and dog pounds. They have all ages, from young to old, and all different breeds that need homes. The dog I had to have put down yesterday was an ex "bait" dog, and it was a great experience to see her come out of her shell, live and normal life, and be happy!

So please remember, before you buy a cute puppy at the mall pet shop (mostly from puppy mills), please consider a rescue.

Oops, let me clarify. I wasn't comparing Bruce to a Mastiff. He has Bull Mastiffs.

Abner, my condolences for the loss of your friend.

But to the extent possible, many happy returns to you both.

Thanks Steve! I appreciate it. And it's ok, all good things must come to an end.

My boy is about 240lbs, but not a bit of fat on him, he's just looooong and huge!

They really are gentle giants, but also very protective in their own, quiet way. If someone he doesn't know approaches me, he just gets in-between me and the person and doesn't let them get near me. He doesn't bark, growl, or show any aggression, he just blocks their path. He also knows the hierarchy of "the pack", and is super-protective of my wife and daughter. He's never shown any aggression at all, but I would NOT want to be the guy who tries to harm them, it could get really ugly, really quickly.

Jesus! 240 pounds! You must spend a fortune in dog food. When you have to take them to the vet, how do you transport them?

Guinness apparently stopped listing heaviest dog records in 2000 -- wonder why? -- but before that, their heaviest was in 1989, Zorba, a 343-pound English mastiff.
