Knowing you I'm surprised you didn't have a title like "Rhode Island governor looks to have taxpayers give free tuition to all"

If you scroll down to the end of the article and read the viewers comments, that's pretty much what most of them are saying! LOL

I often wonder why people on this continent treat free tuition like such a radical idea. I once read a post-apocalyptic sci fi book by some Canadian author, where the protagonists hail from this leftist utopia eco-paradise sustainable everything people's republic (located in and around former Greater Toronto area), and the whole story is an author's tract on some sociopolitical ideas. And there he has a brilliant young woman from the badlands who wants to go to the republic to study to be a doctor, but "can't afford tuition". This is a society where each university degree gives you an extra vote, and even here universally accessible education is unthinkable. Meanwhile, it's a reality in many countries including most of Europe and, at one time, at California community colleges. Puzzling.

Just to be clear: education is a hybrid public-private good; who pays for it is a legitimate topic for policy discussion. You can guess where I lean to.

Because it's not free. We have to pay for it, poor people are taxed more. I already am taxed enough. Now I don't have health insurance because of people needing free/cheap health insurance. So me as a working class male, losses in every case that involves free stuff.

Nevertheless, it's how things work in Germany and France. Likewise, accommodating "people needing free/cheap health insurance" gave us OHIP I sure appreciated back in 2009 when juggling short-term contracts. These are not radical ideas on account of already existing.

Then move to Germany or France. The United States is not a socialist or communist nation. In fact, the United States bailed out both Germany and France.
