You've heard of "off off-broadway?" Well this question is off off-topic but since there are a number of servicemen and women who participate I thought I'd try it here. While watching TV this fine patriotic morning I had the opportunity to see the Air Force Band and I noticed something I didn't recognize from my days of being probably the worst Air Guardsman ever. Honestly, I was the icon for the TI's old saw that I must have shined my shoes with a Hershey bar. I'm aware that insignia, ranks and uniforms change: e.g., Chief Master Sergeants have three up, E-4s are no longer sergeants and 1505s (great uniform) are way long gone. However, the insignia on the enlisted men's service cap really puzzled me. I thought there were only two types of insignia, large and unringed for commissioned and smaller and ringed for enlisted. The insignia worn by the enlisted band members was significantly different, vaguely reminiscent of Army warrant officers but these personnel had enlisted chevrons. What gives?

No. Chief Master Sergeants have 3 up, 8 total. That changed in about 1994 or 95.

I used to have four until I traded them in for gold bars.

It is ceremonial and unique to the bands.
