So many of these receipt things turn out to be fakes, it's prudent to wait for all information to come out.

You'd think by now people would learn to view every news article on the Internet with the same skepticism that they do on April 1st.

I hate the whole concept of tipping and wish it would go away. In many cultures around the world tipping is considered weird and unnecessary. People just don't know how to react if you offer them a tip. We should emulate them.

My father has had a long career in the nuclear field which has included some travel to foreign countries. In Germany, a waitress would be insulted if you left her a tip. If you leave a tip for a German waitress, she would think you're saying that her boss isn't paying her enough money.

Thanks for sharing, Ted. This is actually a mind-blowing contrast. :eek5:

I forced myself not to leave a tip the other day

I think i have not left a tip twice in my life. The other day I took my mom to what i though was a nice little place in old town, but the service was horrible!!!!!!!!!! I went to leave a tip, and my mom talked me in to not leaving one. She was right, I am too nice sometimes even when I get bad service. I always feel obligated to tip.

    :(

Of course, we all know that in the US we tip our waitresses because we know that they're not being paid enough.

And that is the problem- a decent wage. Empirical reseach have shown that tipping promotes racism and sexism. Also, reseach have shown that the skill kitchen workers are often left out.

What? You mean everything on the Internet isn't true?

    Sexual harassment as well.

I was once traveling for business and stopped at this diner. The waitress was nice. She had one of those faces that made her age difficult to place. If you told me 19 I'd believe it. If older, though, that was absolutely a possibility.

At the next table this guy was there with his very clearly teenage (still in high school) son. I was by myself in a pre-smartphone world and the place was nearly empty. So I caught most of dad's pep talk. Junior thought the waitress was cute, Dad was coaching him on how to hit on her. What was most disturbing was his use of phrases like "if you want her go get her" and "she's there for the taking."

After dropping off my food she went to their table where junior hit in her in the most perfectly awkward way that only a teenager could manage. She said "listen, I'm flattered, but I'm also 35, have kids and a boyfriend. Thanks but no." She walked away looking very awkward about the whole situation (surprise?).

Dad slaps junior on the back tells him it's OK. They just won't tip her. Dad adds that junior is lucky she didn't say yes because he wouldn't want to date someone so stuck up.

I'm not sure what's worse; the fact that people think their tip entitles them to complete servitude or the fact that I felt compelled to overtip to compensate for this guy being a jerk. I mean, I'm sure she benefitted from the money with so few tables that night. But I can't imagine it helps ones self-esteem to have people give you more money than is customary because they feel sorry for you. Though I'd suspect that latter mindset is likely how a European or Australian waitress might feel when you try to tip them.

As someone who used to wait tables (albeit many years ago) I remember that it didn't take long before one developed a keen sense of who was going to tip well or poorly pretty much the moment they walked in the door.

Are you sure it was not self-fulfilling prophecy? You inadvertently provided a better dining experience to those whom you think were better tippers. Thus your hunches paid-off.

    I'm sure. Ask any waiter.

Well, still no uproar about it being a forged receipt. They evidently have security footage of the couple signing the receipt so, presumably, someone has actually checked enough of the tape to ensure this isn't all a rouse.

In any case, the couple has been banned. Now they can freely purchase gyros and Greek salad from someone who is sufficiently citizeny enough.

As I said, WTF? This kind of crap shouldn't surprise anyone given the political rhetoric being thrown around. Disgusting is all I have to say. I am glad to see how supportive the employer is though. :)

You do realize, do you not, that tipped employees have a separate minimum wage, something like $3.91 an hour.

And how does tipping promote racism and sexism?
