You Were Just Named to the Presidential Cabinet

I thought it might be fun to have a less serious thread about politics.

With Trump now saying he would appoint his daughter, Ivanka, to his cabinet it made me think about RFK being Attorney General and some of the more controversial political appointments in our history.

So, your candidate of choice just won and to thank you for your vigorous defense of them on DI they are rewarding you with any cabinet position you choose. Confirmation is in the bag (they had embarassing photos of 51 Senators) so don't worry about that.

Cabinet only, no courts or ambassador appointments. Just for the fun of it we'll say that the handful of positions considered "cabinet-level" but not actually part of the cabinet are up for grabs too (e.g. Chief of Staff, Ambassador to the UN, EPA Administrator etc.)

The US doesn't have this position any more (and I'm Canadian) but I'd want:

Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare.

Why not? I'm HEALTHY, EDUCATED ... and ON WELFARE.

PS. I'm indebted to the late comedian, Nipsey Russell, for this line. Great job, Nipsey. Gone but never forgotten.

I'll choose Secretary of the Interior. It could be fun.

Well, we have the Department of Education and the Department of Health & Human Services. I would say combine them, but anything that streamlines efficiency and eliminates waste is anathema in Washington D.C. these days.

Two of my childhood favorites were Nipsey Russell and Flip Wilson. Nipsey had a good run (87), but Flip was gone way too soon.

I'm thinking Secretary of Education. It's low key to the point where I likely wouldn't invite too much scandal and, depending on how I roll, I should be guaranteed a job with either for-profit education companies or some educational lobbyists.

Giving a Dominica answer, I might enjoy the challenge of being Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and Investment. I've long said that we'd develop a lot more quickly paying attention to small countries that have developed rapidly and sustainably, like Singapore, Bermuda, the Caymans, Liechtenstein, and so forth. There's nothing insurmountable stopping this country from being a destination jurisdiction for e-commerce startups.

Well, nowadays the position formerly known as Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare has been broken up into two positions known as Secretary of Health and Human Services and Secretary of Education.

The U.S. already has corporation-friendly places like Delaware and Wyoming, Steve. They're 'way bigger than 8 Copthall, in Roseau.

My favourites too, but as a young(ish) adult. And Slappy White, gone from us in 1995, at 74. I have fun memories of Flip as "Geraldine" and as "Rev. Leroy, of the Church of What's Happenin' Now."

Speaking of African-American comedians, I was once introduced to Richard Pryor, when he was all of 21 or so. In those early days, he was doing a gig in a really rough bar in my home town, here in Canada. Very tough crowd, but he was holding his own well. Next time I saw him was on TV, years later, well into his success. That man worked for everything he got.

Hardly. While the big fish can juggle their tax burden to keep things a little more manageable, no place in the U.S. is friendly to startups considering federal corporate tax is nearly 40% and many states levy a corporate or B&O tax on top of that. Even you pinko Canadians are better than that!

So, compare that with... nothing, nothing, carry the nothing... right, zero tax. Yes, Dominica (and many other West Indian jurisdictions) are much friendlier to those who want to keep the fruits of their labor.

Slightly off. I was around 20-21 - that means Richard must have been 23-24. Richard - born 1940. Johann - born 1943.

CIA Director. Not because I'd be any good at it, but just because I'd have access to all the secrets. National Security Advisor or NSA Director might work for that reason too.

Secretary of Education might be a good fit for me, since it looks easy, doesn't seem to require any real skill or talent, and I'd still get cabinet rank. The only danger would be if the President I was serving eliminated the department entirely.
