    How about zoolologist Desmond Morris

After Desmond Morris' multiple books Catwatching, Dogwatching,
Manwatching, and Babywatching--I think you can say your likely to find good authoritative answers there...

I last looked last year, but Morris even had a splendid website chockful of detail and further info and goings on with his topics of interest. Try searching "Desmond Morris" or "www.desmondmorris.com" or "www.manwatching.com"
    or "The Human Zoo"

You will have a much longer and happier life if you call before you come over. My pet cobra will be nicer too!

If I remember correctly, the shows I have seen on the subject say pets calm you and lower your blood pressure too. Also, they give you something to talk to so that you can just vent...and not feel to silly talking to thin air. I know that my cat does all that and more. Sometimes when I am down she lies down next to me or more often climbs up on my chest and lies down. She starts purring and I immediately feel better. I can feel myself calming.

Lots of people/organizations take pets to hospitals and nursing homes to help patients and from watching tv shows the patients really seem to like it and perk up!

Animals are very empathic for the most part.

I am sorry I can't send you to any sites or books for verification as I know of none of the top of my head, and I don't feel like searching the web for references. Still my personal experiences lead me to believe that Pets do indeed help us live longer/healthier lives.

Maybe someone will do a thesis on the subject for a MS or Ph.D. in mental health or gerentology type subject and post a link here....then again it has probably already been done. :)

Re: What role do dogs play in a long and healthy life?

My understanding is that although fairly high in protein, they are also very high in cholesterol and saturated fat, and therefore should be enjoyed only in moderation.

As I walked by my neighbors house, with his dog barking and jumping at the end of his chain he said
"Don't worry he just loves people!"
I said, "I hope you usually feed him dog food!"
I used to have about 40 sheep. My boss and I were having lunch and he asked if I ate the sheep. I said, you mean "maytag" and "fridgidair". I try to name them where they're going to end up.
On a different joke. A radio station said they were having someone from PETA on the show.
When the PETA liason was introduced the talk show host asked it PETA stood for People Eating Tasty Animals.
There was a gasp and the person responded, absolutely not, its for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
    All the best!

    1 cat,
    dozens of chickens,
    and probably sheep are next.
