How many differant versions of the venerable Oxford English Dictionary are there for sale in book form, CD form, online etc. and what are there costs? Thank you.

    TRy amazon.com:

"Top matches for "Oxford English Dictionary" from all stores Books : See all 344 results in Books...
The New Oxford American Dictionary -- Frank R. Abate (Editor); Hardcover
The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (2 Vol. Set; Thumb Indexed Edition) -- Lesley Brown (Editor); Hardcover
The Compact Oxford English Dictionary/Book, Magnifying Glass and User's Guide -- Edmund S. Weiner (Editor), John Simpson (Editor); Hardcover ..."

If you want to be a writer you do need to learn to research, and with the Internet it is easier than ever.

It is an interesting historical fact that when the British burned Washington during the War of 1812 that they destroyed the only dictionary then in existence in the United States.

As a result, Americans had to create their own spellings and got many wrong. As Canadians, not wishing to deeply commit to anything, we chose the middle ground.

We accept the American organization but reject the British organisation. We honour the British but do not honor the Americans.

If you can speak most languages, you can spell them. No spelling bees.

I detest amazon.com for many reasons the first being; I live in WA and get charged sales tax if I buy from them. I like Powells in Portland, OR ( going there ) and www.bn.com
    I love doing research, what I don't love is being a " member ".

Powell's use to be incredible 15 or 20 years ago. Now it is still neat but it has been yuppified like much of our society. Nothing inherently wrong just much more coporate and plastic like. It is still probably one of best "book" experiences in the world. I love amazon both for information available (where else can you see Tom Head's top book picks?) and the convience of ordering from home.

    Bad Experience....

About 7 years ago, I bought the OED on CD-ROM...
It never never worked! Appeals for help went unanswered.
I still have it, but it's $300 wasted.

I keep wondering, everytime I read about an update, if I'll
wade in again--but last I heard, it wasn't MAC compatible,
so therefore, without the grace of God, I go not there!
