The female characters in that game have means of support even less visible than Thelma Lou in Mayberry. Time to re-boot them all. Special Agent Scarlett, anyone?

OK so you know that I had to look that up. From Wikipedia

Little is known about Thelma Lou's telelife, despite her impressive role in the series. It is uncertain how or when she met Barney. In one episode, Barney mentions he met her at a funeral. In another episode, it is mentioned that she attended Mayberry Union High, graduating in the same class with Barney and Andy Taylor. Aside from her romance with Barney Fife, she was given very little character development during the series' run. She was generally portrayed as a sweet-natured, somewhat touchy, caring person who genuinely had an understanding of Barney, despite his unbecoming antics and personality problems. She sang in the choir, lived in her own home, and was apparently employed and self-sufficient. Like most Mayberry ladies, she is an accomplished cook, being especially celebrated for her "cashew fudge" (a favorite of Barney's). Thelma Lou's last name was never given on the show. Her occupation is never revealed, but she mentions once that she "had to get back to the office." Prior to the arrival of Helen Crump in Mayberry, Lydia Crosswaithe is introduced as one of Thelma Lou's friends. Unfortunately, Lydia's extremely odd personality doomed an effort by Barney and "Thel" to arrange a date and possible romantic match with

Lydia was played by Josie Lloyd, daughter of accomplished actor/director Norman Lloyd. (You might remember him as the older doctor, Auschlander, on St. Elsewhere, or from many, many other things.)

I've been watching the show for all of my life, literally, and am a real fan. I'm particularly fond of the B&W shows before Knotts left. (After he left, Griffith's character became the manic one, instead of the calm one the craziness went around. Also, it kinda became "The Opie Show." Yeesh.) Yet I didn't get the reference to Thel having to get back to the office until last week when I watched that episode. I'd seen the episode many times before, but I didn't realize she inferred a job. That's why it was in my head when I left that post.

I get Helen Crump, but I liked almost every potential girlfriend for Andy that preceded her better. Ellie was too young, but the rest of them were amazing. My favorite was county nurse Mary played by Julie Adams.
