    David,

Your'e posting things all over the place about all sorts of things! Some of the things you're posting, in my view, are not relevant as far as this message board is concerned, albeit they may be relevant in the larger scale of things. What is it YOU REALLY want to know or get at and/or surface?

Perhaps David is seeking life experience credit for some elusive degree program. :D

I want to go Zooom! I want to breakout and become a writer and not look back. I would love to go to Iowa for an M.A. and then on to the Ph.D..
Currently I am out of work waiting for back surgery on an 8mm herniation at L5-S1 and now blod clots in my left leg.
I am appalled at how education seems to rob people of their faith or at least compromise them into fear for speaking up for what they believe in. I was raised a communist/athiest and over the course of the last 20 years while I was gaining my faith I saw the rest of my generation drift away from the faith of their birth.
I have several axes to grind, many have a high polish. I have no formal writing training ( obvious ).

Many of the best writers have not had formal writing education (Steven King & Tom Clancy are two that quickly come to mind, of course Steven Speilberg does but then he JUST completed his degree).

Even many non-fiction writers do not have fromal writing education. Most use their education to determine what they are going to write ABOUT, not how to write.

My wife is a freelance writer who got started writing right out of highschool, here BA is in environmental design which she has used for only one article in 20 years of writing (includes 5 books). My daughter has a degree in Public Relations ands works as an editor for a magazine publisher (only slightly related). I have written 15 articles and 1 book and yet I am an engineer (I have written ABOUT engineering, but engineers are notoriusly bad at writing).

So, if you want to write, write - no special training required. Pick a topic you are passionate about and find a magazine about that topic and offor them the article, you might even get paid. But don't expect to make a living at writing, unless you are VERY VERY good and work at it for many years (DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB!!).

    Also see:

    Quinn Taylor Jackson wrirter extrodinaire!

His education came after being a successful writer! Mostly because he wants to learn.

Maybe therein lies the idea for your first article. Write something interesting about your journey from your communist/athiest background to your current position of faith. Grind that axe hard, put it down on paper and submit it to an appropriate publication--maybe something like Focus Magazine, or even The Teaching Home Magazine. (I don't know if these magazines *in particular* accept content written by contributors, but there are magazines that are almost entirely written by contributors. The Teaching Home Magazine, a Christian homeschooling magazine, might be particularly interested in your vexation about how modern public education seems to pull children away from faith.)

My point is, that if you can write an article about your experience and get it published, you will at least have gotten started. It will give you something to put in a portfolio, a publishing credit. From there, who knows where you might go?

I also have to wonder if there are other ham radio operators who share your faith that would be willing to pay to subscribe to a newsletter specifically designed with their interests in mind.*

On the other hand, maybe you should consider attending seminary--pastors write often, and they can grind away at their axes to the hearts' content ;)

*A quick search on google shows that some such newsletters are already in existence. Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship, for example, publishes a quarterly newsletter, which is sent to its membership.

We gotta get you a hobby (or maybe a couple dozen hobbies) :) LoL

    all the best!
ps at first I thought you were a trekkie and intended to end with "spock on" LoL :)

what is the record for posts in 24 hours?

What is the record for posts in a day? From zero to Sr. member in a day? LoL :)

    Thanks David!

Let me go on record as approving of David's perhaps manic efforts! He's enlivened a somewhat stodgy board...

In addition, if Dave would like to go to Iowa for writing--why not
have Iowa come to him? I mean, I think the University of Iowa
Independent/Distance study offers courses that access their insrtuctors....

And finally, how about reading "The Reasonable Woman: A Guide to Intellectual Survival" -- by Wendy McElroy.
Her side-story of being a homeless teenager on the streets of Toronto to becoming a successful well-published writer (visit www.ifeminist.com)--as well as her example of intellectually flourishing despite the circumstances is inspiring and instructive, regardless of one's sex!

    And has made it!

Subsequent to this feat of attaining senior membership through posting inflation, I will not think of senior members in the same way again.

maybe we should set goals for ourselves

Musaira, just think, if you can go from 13 posts to 100 in 10 hours, you could break the record. LoL :)
Maybe I should think about getting to 1,000 by Tuesday?
    All the best! LoL :)

Actually, the creative writing courses available through UI's Guided Independent Study are generally taught by current students in the Writers Workshop. The nonfiction writing courses are mostly taught by adjuncts. At least, that was the case when I was a course editor there a few years back.

You can find links to course descriptions at http://camera.video.uiowa.edu/cgi-bin/GIS/category.pl?subject=65

    Now is the time!

    David,

Other than trying to post more messages than anyone else, now is the time to 'back off' and stop posting. Get (if it's there and I think it is, and if I'm wrong this is ceratinly how it is coming over!) the anger out of your system and lets get things back to where they should. You are not posting things relevant to this sire. People here are very kind (in the main) and will help but don't get 'their backs up' bu just posting re things that truly are not relevant here.

    Re: Now is the time!

He is posting his "off-tipic" topic's in the right section, and his other posts do follow the main topic.

If he does have anger to unleash, it is at least better structured than some (ONE!) on aed and the Summit Univeristy site.

Most of his posts do have a point, even if I am sick of polls (no offense David, but we went through a huge batch of them earlier when it was found out you could do it).:D :p

The Summit issue is rather curious. When the connection was posted on distancedegree.net a joke was made but no explanation at all.

I am taking the joke as admittance to the truth of a connection until\unless an explanation is given. I also want to state that if true, this drastically changes how I view that board. Maybe I am a touch paranoid at times, but connections of that nature, whether acknowledged beforehand or not (especially if they are not), bring up the question of objectivity. We will see.
