As someone who has worked for small, medium and huge companies I found this interesting (and at times amusing). Navigating Your Way Through Bullshit Corporate Lingo
I retired 20-odd years ago. It is depressing, but not surprising to see that nothing much in corporate life has changed - certainly not the quality (low) or amount (huge) of bullshit, anyway. I was fortunate in being legitimately eligible to "take the money and run" at age 50. My reasoning? As a mob boss might phrase it "I wanna stay healthy." My only regret is I couldn't have taken much, much more money. But I do OK anyway. Only the buzzwords have changed - as they do with monotonous regularity, every year or two. J.
My boss doesn't shy away from buzzwords. But he is also incredibly adept at seeing through people who use buzzwords to fill in spaces where they have no knowledge. You can use "synergy" in a proper sentence where you demonstrate that you know what you're talking about. I recall one time when a consultant laid out a meaningless string of buzzwords in response to a question. It was something like "I think we need to capitalize on existing synergies to shift the paradigm and really take us to a new level." Any of those would have been fine if they had enhanced a sentence that actually said something. My boss, a soft spoken gentleman, gently removes his glasses and sets them on the table and looks him in the eye and says "You don't have the foggiest idea of what to do, do you?" The guy turned beet red and flubbed through more buzzword salads before the boss ended the meeting and sent him on his way. What depressed us all was the knowledge that the consultant almost certainly went on to work for someone else who didn't see through his nonsense.
I worked in the Marketing department in a for-profit student travel company. They loved-loved-loved them some buzzwords. Especially Agile and Scrum....scrummy agile buzzwords are the best. One of the most ineffectual management teams I've even seen in real life. Parody could not do it this well.
