Another story suggested that there had been a ransom demand to release the files. I find it of great concern that more and more hacked victims are paying the ransom in order to get their files back -- including, recently (according to this USA Today article: Hackers ramp up computer attacks that demand 'ransom') four police departments in Maine and one in Massachusetts. The ransom demands are small enough to be manageable -- $300 to $10,000 -- and so they are often paid, in untraceable BitCoins. What is one to do, other than gnashing teeth and backing up files constantly and hoping the backup drive is not vulnerable.

Well, this isn't practical for a business, I guess - but at home, I have a second computer that has no internet access and no network to the other. I keep everything on it. The one that has internet access has pretty well browser and OS only - nothing on it to steal.

Keep the logs well-scrubbed, etc. - and what can they get?

Even better - take the OS and browser away, too. Surf with the aid of the browser on a "live" Linux CD. I have about 40 to choose from - they were all free. Virtually nothing installed on the hard drive! Now that must be really frustrating for would-be hackers!
