People play with guns all the time these days. I was at an air show last year and watched a police officer, who was flirting with anyone that walked, repeatedly take his service weapon out of the holster to show it off to the young women he seemed eager to impress.

We've sort of ignored all sense of gun safety because that safety might infringe upon our "God given right" to pack heat.

If you're going to make the case that a belief in private gun ownership implies that one also believes it's okay to mishandle guns, you may not want to use a police officer as your example.

Really sad. We lose kids (and wives, brothers, friends, etc) to "accidental" shootings all the damn time.

An action can be criminally negligent and still be accidental, so there's no need for scare quotes unless you're implying he shot her on purpose.

While gun rights advocates may not like requirements such as gun locks, they do tend to be big advocates of gun safety courses and learning how to safely handle your weapon.

In 2016, I don't buy that for a second, that's a termination offense for every police department that I know of in the United States. If you saw that, it was most likely a security guard, a field that is still very much unregulated in many jurisdictions.

Never mind God, it's in the Constitution of the United States, the same document that guarantees your right to type those words.

I kind of see what you are saying. I posted an old thread about a mother was a over the top gun rights activist. She referred to her guns as "toys". Her toddler ended up shooting her in the back while driving because the numb skull left a loaded pistol in the back of her car. After that, she quickly took down her FB page. Guns are NOT toys.

Agreed, but they're also not inherently evil. They're inanimate objects that require human action to function; if that action is stupid and results in tragedy, then punish the stupid person, not the millions of others who use them responsibly.

A sad story indeed; however, the gun didn't go off by itself.

I suppose so. Taking the quotes off doesn't change what I was trying to say, which is it happens too damned much and we aren't doing enough to change that.

What's your solution, legislation to ban stupidity?

What's yours? Guns in Cracker Jack boxes?

Severely punishing offenders and criminals who use guns, via mandatory, judge-proof sentencing, not responsible gun owners, would be a good start.

Then there's that pesky thing called the United States Constitution.

Hell no. That would make Cracker Jack cost too much.

"Judge-proof sentencing" includes things like three strikes and other mandatory minimums, which have led to absurd injustices in a number of cases. Let judges do their job.

Unfortunately, they can't be trusted to do their jobs, and routinely abuse their discretion. Courts here are literal revolving doors, with repeat criminals, including those who use guns, getting free pass after free pass, in spite of our "one year mandatory" gun law, which is beyond a bad joke.

guns are FOR killing. If your intent doesn't include the possibility of killing the thing you're aiming at, you're being reckless. Keep it loaded, keep it locked, and keep it holstered until you're ready to kill. Problem solved.

Legislation to ban stupidity? If we had laws against illegal stupidity, our jails and prisons would be even more over-crowded than they already are now.

Guns in Cracker Jack boxes? We already have enough of a problem with people who got therir driver's licenses out of cracker jack boxes.
