So my neighbor wants to replace part of the fence that is on the side of my kitchen. He got estimates for both block and vinyl. There is a price difference, but vinyl just doesn't seem that sturdy to me. I mean, block wall can basically last forever. Does anyone have vinyl fencing?

The vinyl fencing can look nice and clean, never needs paint, never rots, etc. but if you're using it to hold in a dog or some other animal it is unreliable because, as you said, it's not very strong.

Yeah, I am kind of steering towards the block wall. They charge more, but they are not charging to remove all of the thick vines (3 or 4 inches thick) that my neighbor has growing on the wood fence. The vinyl company is charging to remove all those vines which will require and trailer and dump fees. Plus, I want something that lasts since we plan to live out the rest of our days in this house.

I have a vinyl fence. As Kizmet says, it looks clean and I never have to worry about rot.

We have a dog but he's a beagle, not a doberman, and he doesn't dig so the fence is stable enough for our purposes. But different spaces and specific needs really impact which decision is best.

For my neighborhood, vinyl fits the overall aesthetic. A block wall would look out of place here. At my last house, vinyl would have looked out of place. Part of it is the neighborhood and part of it is the style of the house itself. If it is only going on one side of your house then I would imagine the block wall might look a little better.

In that last house my house was below the grade of the neighboring house. So I have this four foot retaining wall on one side of my yard that basically kept his yard out of mine. We both pitched in to have it fixed up shortly after I moved in (we both had a vested interest in the wall being secure and attractive). He cared more about stability. I cared more about how it would look in my yard. So we came to a compromise where he didn't care what I did to it as long as it didn't impact the stability. So I built out a little stone patio from the wall and put in a stone pizza oven with matching stones.

Can't really have as much fun with vinyl.

My wife and I talked it over last night. We came to the conclusion that block is best. It is permanent, and I don't have to worry about my dogs busting it down. I am still pretty amazed at the block wall quote, it is much cheaper than I thought. Also, the block wall guys will take out and dump my neighbors vines (no charge) that are huge and invasive since they have been growing (interwomen in the wood fencing) there for the last thirty years or so. The vinyl fencing companies add additional fees to remove that stuff adding to the cost. Block is the way to go, no brainer.
