Geez, being from California, I am not used to people carrying guns/machine guns all over the place in public. I realize there was no violence this time, but still. I also realize that both protestors and counter protestors were armed. I don't know, I guess it is a foreign concept to most Californians. It just seems these types of issues make tempers flare on both sides. I mean, it's one thing to have some fist fights break out, but what if someone loses it and starts firing? We recently had some KKK guys come to a city next door to me. Violence broke out and there were injuries. I wonder what may have happened if there were guns involved?

Luckily this was a peaceful protest.

Virginia has open carry without permit. I've occasionally seen civilians with holstered handguns. No one's shot me yet.

Machine guns, including all weapons capable of automatic fire, have been outlawed in the United States for civilians since 1934. It's possible to get a permit, but you need to pass both state and Federal background checks and permitting processes. You have a better chance of being hit by lightning at the same time you realize you won the lottery than you do of seeing a civilian with a machine gun in public.

That's good to know. I guess I just don't see the wisdom behind protestors and counter protestors carrying around guns and rifles based around such touchy subjects. Of course, that's just my opinion.
