I recently stayed in a pretty fancy hotel. After I got home, I noticed some little red bumps on parts of my skin. I immediately went to a derm doctor. She told me I got scabies (gross), most likely from the hotel bedding. Luckily, she gave me some insecticide cream that took care of it. I went and bought some Lysol, which I plan to spray on hotel bedding in the future. I don't know if it will help, but it is better than nothing. Be careful.
Oh, that's no fun. Glad to hear it was easy to take care of. I got hooked on the TV show, Hotel Impossible, where this "hotel expert" goes around trying to save hotels on the brink of closing. One thing I learned from watching the show is that the sheets don't always get changed between guests and the comforters rarely ever get washed. It's enough to make a person want to take a sleeping bag and just sleep on top of everything. Better yet, I think a person might be better off sleeping on one of those fold-up cots hotels offer for extra room occupants and using your own sheets and blankets.
Yeah, the suckey thing is that it took a couple of weeks to get in and see the doctor. In the mean while I was so itchy I was scratching my skin raw from the itch. It is horrible. You could feel little things crawling all over you.
During the time my book on complaining was popular, I got a lot of mail from readers. A common topic was unsatisfactory hotel rooms of various kinds. The most common outcome when people wrote/emailed to complain was an offer of anywhere from one to three nights' accommodation -- especially when they followed my advice to send a copy to the hotel company's corporate counsel.
