    Hi All,

In my job field you must have an Accredited Baccalaurette Degree with courses in Accounting, Law, Business, and Acquisitions supplementing your degree in order to promote past a Level-12 (I had this same problem a few years ago until I got off my duff and did something about it).

I have several senior employees that are trying to get promoted and just cannot get themselves started on the right track due to skepticism and lack of information (I put Copies of Books by Authors in this Forum out on my desk and some selfish individual(s) have taken them home). I just don't know what to do and I am losing people left and right!! I have order numerous copies of Bears Guides and put them out...but these people seem to only understand black and white when its written on government letter-head. I want to publish and internal "Information Guide" to try to bolster support for going back to school. I have suggested that:

    a. Monetary Awards be given per ...maybe 12 Semester hours
    b. 1-hour lunch periods (instead of 30-minutes) be granted to persons in internet courses
    c. Company Computers be authorized to take courses
    d. We pay for (reimburse) money paid for classes if you pass.

These implemented along with a solid publication should help me somewhat...I hope. An example of a job announcement with the requirements follows:

    Thanks,

    Mike

The salary indicated in the job announcement should be ample incentive to acquire the additional education required - I would be off to the nearest Community College and take all 4 classes simultaneously. People should always be looking at least 5 years ahead (what do I need to get promoted, what if my job becomes obsolete, what if I get laid off, what if I become disabled, etc).

    You're Right IAN

Its ashame that I have to push Mid-Career employees out their executive chairs and out into the next phase of their careers. I just wish that I could transfer what I have gained from Degreeinfo through some type of osmosis into the minds of my employees.

I am going to put out a pamphlet with references to this site and others and hopefully I can get at least one person involved...at least my conscious will be clear that I did SOMETHING to help.

    Regards'

You might try to present several specific plans that would lead to the appropriate qualifications. For example, list 24 credits worth of CLEP/DANTES exams that would be appropriate for meeting the 24 hour requirement, noting that any previously taken courses in those areas would reduce the number of exams necessary. Maybe you could work out a program with a local or DL school, and get them to commit to helping advise your employees. Sometimes people can be overwhelmed by a great deal of information (such as a Bear's Guide) and just need to be given specific options with a clearly established path and workload.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the advise

I think that I am going to put a package deal together and try to get the Community College & UC San Bernadino involved. Thanks for your input...I will let you know how I do!

    fear, apathy

Sometimes having a cadre go through the training together can help overcome fear.
When I was manager of a school I encouraged all the staff who did not have degrees to earn bachelors and teaching credentials. We had a portfolio class right in the school over the lunch period. It really did get some people moving. One guy got 40 credits through the portfolio and had an associates degree in under a year and a bachelors degree in two.
Some colleges will offer the courses at your worksite if you have enough students.
    All the best!
