    I noticed this in a email I received from the CC I am going to attend:

    XXXXXXXX College offers a Food Bank located in Room 1955. All currently enrolled XXXXXX College students may pick up one bag of groceries each week when classes are in session. The Food Bank is open Tuesdays, 12:00 pm-2:00 pm & 4:00 pm-6:00 pm. Students are required to provide proof of enrollment and a photo ID,

    That is pretty cool!

    I like this.

    My best friend growing up basically starved over his summer breaks. Yes, he worked a job over those breaks, but his meager earnings barely covered his living expenses. He often had to beg for food money from friends and relatives. I could tell he was always terribly embarrassed to do so.

    Yeah, it can be tough. When I was working my way through college, my daily lunch for several years was two hard boiled eggs and saltine crackers. At the time it was only 85 cents, the cheapest thing they had in the cafeteria. I would sometimes alternate it with tuna, since you could buy the little cans for cheap.

    Looking back, it was more than worth the sacrifice. I have been able to live a pretty good life because of my education. We are lucky to have great CC's at an affordable price here in California.

    CC = 1 bag
    Undergrad = 2 bags
    Graduate = 3 bags
    Doctoral = 4 bags (and a 6-Pack of Coke)

    Isn't one of the goals of our country to encourage citizens to pursue higher education in order to better themselves and their families? The attainment of a certificate or degree can possibly lift someone out of poverty and into the middle class. I think what my CC is doing is great. The program runs on donations from grocery stores, and is administered by community volunteers. Zero cost to the taxpayer. It's a win win and I think more schools should do it. By providing this service, the school is helping students with a food expense that may keep certain at risk students from dropping out and completing their degree. Good for the economy in the long run.
