Hi all! Been away for some time introducing my new baby girl to this world. But, I didn't let her keep me from my DL studies. I just completed my requirements for a Certificate in General Studies from USQ. It is only a certificate, and not even a graduate-level one at that. But, it was my first foray into DL when I started it, and I wanted to test the waters before getting too involved. And now I have my first parchment! Many more parchments to come... Christian Certificate in General Studies, USQ 2002 (Cool! I can now list something under my name!)
Congratulations on the certificate and the baby! I have a pretty good idea of what a baby is -- I assume a Canadian baby is much like an American one, just more polite and less ambitious <g> -- but I've no clue what a Certificate in General Studies is. After the champagne wears off, perhaps you can explain? Best regards, Richard Kanarek, American [This space for rent <g>]
Thanks all for your kind comments. The certificate required me to complete any four classes of my choosing from those offered by the university. While it is expected one would choose undergraduate-level courses, you are not prevented from choosing graduate-level courses. It is primarily intended for those who want an introduction to university work, those who have questionable entry qualifications, or those who can't wait three years for their first parchment and want something faster (me!). When all is said and done, once someone receives this award, they no longer have to worry about entrance requirements in Australia. My four classes were Economics, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, and Communication. These four classes also form half of the core requirements for the Bachelor's of Business degree, which is why I chose them, as now I have a head start on my next degree (I am not sure this counts as inbreeding). Congratulations, indeed. Your alma mater was the site of one of the stranger moments in my life, in terms of reminders of self importance. They invited me to be a speaker on their campus during a convention of the Australia and South Pacific distance education organization. Treated like royalty in Toowoomba. They assigned one of their larger lecture halls for my talk And when it came time, there were precisely five people in the room, and two of those were my wife and me, and one was the conference organizer. We never figured out what happened, although a then-famous Australian golfer had been a gruiesome accident that morning, losing an arm, and there was some speculation people were glued to their TVs, but hardly likely. (I went on to do very well attended talks in Sydney and Melbourne.)

congradulations!!! Thank you so much for sharing your double dose of good news!!! A certificate and a baby. I certainly much prefer hearing positive things that are happening in people lives, than the usual unaccredited stuff. All the best!
July 24th is my birthday. I was 15 that year. Sorry to hear about your experience on that day John. I am sure if I wasn't chasing girls on that day I would have been there for your speech. Christian
