I've been following it. It will be interesting to see if it extends through the Olympics.

I would have expected them instead to hold their own Olympics before doing that.

I don't think it's reasonable to assume that drugs can ever be entirely eliminated from sports. I actually think it would be more interesting to have an anything goes approach and see what super-human feats people can pull off. I don't watch sports at all right now, but I would definitely watch that.

I would not be in favor of this approach because there is an increasing number of youngish children competing. They are not responsible enough at that age to really give informed consent for taking those sorts of drugs.

I don't disagree at all with that, but once a person reaches a certain age, I think it should be up to the individual (and his/her physician) and not the government or some sports agency. In fact, it is probably much safer to do so under the supervision of a physician (like Arnold Schwarzenegger did when he openly admitted to using steroids).

It's interesting, I think, that when Congress held hearings on whether to criminalize performance enhancing drugs, the DEA and the FDA both recommended against it, finding no basis for that class of drugs to be made illegal. Congress just ignored them and did it anyway.

I'm actually old enough to remember a bunch of high school football players from my school going to the team physician and being prescribed dianabol (an oral steroid) to bulk up over the summer practice season. A lot of those guys looked like little boys before the break. They came back looking like men. All perfectly legal at the time.
